Debate about Challenges for the Communication of Science

On 9 May last, the meeting “Challenges for the Communication of Science in the 21st Century” took place.

Teresa Firmino, journalist and science editor of the newspaper Público, Helena Machado, a sociologist at the University of Minho and holder of the European Research Council, Óscar Afonso, economist, president of the Observatory of Economics and Fraud Management and researcher at the University of Porto, and Renato Henriques, a geologist at the University of Minho and co-coordinator of the Caminha-Espinho Coastal Program, were invited to discuss the challenges facing the Portuguese Science Communication.

The difficult relationship between journalists and scientists, the need to publish scientific articles in impact journals and the possibility of new ways of communicating with different audiences were some of the topics discussed by the guests.

The debate, organized by the new master’s degree in Science Communication, was moderated by Elsa Costa e Silva, a researcher at CECS.
