Ph.D. in Communication Sciences, in 1996, Manuel Pinto is a Full Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho, where he teaches in the areas of Journalistic Studies and Media Literacy. He is the Director of the PhD course in Communication Sciences at UM and chairs the Council of the Institute of Social Sciences.

He has developed research on Media Literacy, Media Sociology, and Communication Policies and, more recently, on Popular Cultures. He coordinated the Portuguese team that participated in the European project EMEDUS (European Media Literacy Education Study), funded by the European Commission. He was an elected member of the General Council of the University of Minho and was a member of the Independent General Council of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal S.A. between 2014 and 2017.
