Isabel dos Guimarães Sá won, in ex-aequo, the Navy Academy Award “Oriente Foundation – Ambassador João de Deus Ramos” 2019 with her latest book entitled The Return of the Dead. The Donors of Porto’s Mercy and the Ocean Expansion (16th-17th Century).
The award is intended to boost and streamline research, scientific research in history, arts and sciences linked to the sea and the Portuguese presence in East Asia. It is a work that “narrates a set of micro-histories of donors who have benefited Porto’s Mercy from the territories of the Iberian expansion, or who, testing from the city, reveal contacts with the transoceanic worlds. Centered in the centuries In the 16th and 17th centuries, the analysis aims at two main objectives: to understand the transformations of family structures operated by emigration to the Iberian empires, and the way the material culture of the people of Porto was affected by the consumption of objects and substances of colonial origin. on the processes of converting different kinds of goods (land, houses, objects, money) into spiritual goods destined for the salvation of the soul”.
