Seminar of the Exchange project “Memoirs, Sons of Empire and European Post-Memories” will take place on April 24 at 2:30 pm in the Multimedia Auditorium of the Institute of Education of the University of Minho.
The session will be presented by Margarida Calafate Ribeiro and Fátima Rodrigues, from the Center for Social Studies of Coimbra.
The aim of this seminar is to reflect on the main conceptual and methodological challenges posed by the project MEMOIRS – children of empires and European postmemories.
In general terms, it seeks to understand the impact of the transfer of memories of the end of colonialism in contemporary Europe. MEMOIRS focuses on the intergenerational memories of the children and grandchildren of those involved in and affected by the decolonization processes in France’s, Portugal’s and Belgium’s colonies in Africa – Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC), Algeria, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. The European colonial heritage is studied through interviews and comparative analysis of second and third generation representations, influenced by post-memory colonial wars and the end of empires.
