What is the current state of electronic monitoring, at national and international level? How can its development be anticipated in light of the growth of artificial intelligence systems? What ethical, social and political challenges emerge from its expansion in scope and range? What are the social, family, economic and penal impacts of serving sentences and measures under electronic monitoring? These are some of the questions under discussion.
Qual é o estado atual da vigilância eletrónica, a nível nacional e internacional? Como se antecipa o seu desenvolvimento face ao crescimento dos sistemas de inteligência artificial? Que desafios éticos, sociais e políticos emergem da sua expansão em amplitude e alcance? Quais os impactos sociais, familiares, económicos e penais do cumprimento de penas e medidas sob vigilância eletrónica? Estas são algumas das questões em debate.
Main investigator Rafaela Granja is giving an open lecture on electronic monitoring in the scope of Deviance and Crime, a curricular unit from the Master on Criminal Sciences, from Law School. The lecture happens saturday, 22nd of March, at University of Minho and its open to all academic community.
Rafaela Granja did a presentation about prison studies to two classes of students of Escola Secundária Quinta das Flores highschool, in Coimbra. The event was an oportunity to debate some data and thoughts regarding the portuguese prison system.
In an era marked by the construction of an increasingly digital and technological justice for children, the use of electronic monitoring within child justice systems is a controversial issue. This article examines the projected (non)futures of electronic monitoring in Portugal by exploring the perspectives of relevant stakeholders involved in the child justice system. Our data show that both opposing and supportive perspectives are anchored on four key axes – education, control, environments and conditions, and stigma – that underpin stakeholders’ perceptions of the different challenges, principles and goals that underpin the child justice.
