The 4th Doctoral Seminar on Communication Sciences and Cultural Studies will be held on May 31, in the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho. John Downey is the guest of the morning session and Isabel Macedo will be responsible for the afternoon workshop.
At 10:00 a.m., John Downey, a researcher at the Center for Research in Communication and Culture (UK), will present the communication “Populism in and by the media during the 2016 EU Referendum campaign in the UK”.
Visiting professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, John Downey seeks to apply the work of the Frankfurt School to the study of media and communication. John Downey is Director of the Center for Research in Communication and Culture at Loughborough, UK, serves on the Executive Board of the UK’s Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA) and is Vice-President of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA).
In the afternoon, at 2:30 p.m., Isabel Macedo will give the workshop “Film analysis: looks from the Cultural Studies”. This workshop aims to promote reflection on the diversity of methodological approaches in film analysis, providing theoretical tools and analysis techniques to those who intend to start in this field of studies. It is also proposed to carry out an exercise of film analysis, where students can apply some of the approaches discussed.
Isabel Macedo holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from the University of Minho and the University of Aveiro in the area of Communication and Culture. She is a researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre and is a member of several national and international associations in the field of communication, education and visual culture.
