The construction and reification of stereotypes under discussion at the Workshop about “Social Communication and the Roma Communities”

On 20 April, “The Media and Roma Communities” was the theme of a workshop organized by the CECS in the Permanent Seminar “Communication and Diversity”.

With the participation of sociologist Sílvia Gomes and journalist Ana Cristina Pereira, the way in which the press conveyed a certain image about minority groups was discussed, contributing to the construction and reproduction of stereotypes.

The workshop was also attended by sociologist Maria José Casa-Nova – trying to show the importance of having a responsible attitude in the news coverage of vulnerable social groups – and three Roma students of the School of Nogueira, who shared some of their experience folks.
