[NEW DEADLINE] Call for papers for the International Congress Festivities, Cultures and Communities: Heritage and Sustainability

The call for papers for the International Congress Festivities, Cultures and Communities: Heritage and Sustainability is open until 15 February 22 February. The event, organised by the “Festivity – Festivities, Cultural Heritage and Community Sustainability” research project team, will take place at the University of Minho from May 4 to 6.

Traditional and popular festivals are at the heart of communities’ cultural and identity dynamics. Whether pilgrimages or carnival celebrations, dramatic performances or religious rituals, festivals punctuate social and individual times and add meaning to collective life. Festivities, often vulnerable to fading or extinction due to changes in lifestyles and the massification and digitalisation of cultures, have recently been reinvigorated. These transformation and re-signification processes call for debate and reflection.

The International Congress Festivities, Cultures and Communities: Heritage and Sustainability provides a meeting point and a place for debating the ongoing research on festivities focusing on the relationship between festivals and communities, encompassing festive cultures and identities, the (re)valorisation of tradition and the cultural and territorial sustainability. Methodological issues in the study of festivals, the relationship between festivals, culture and power, and the influence of technology and digitalisation will also be debated. Furthermore, given contemporary trends, the policies and processes of making festivals part of the heritage, their commodification and touristification will also be central topics of this conference.

The International Congress Festivities, Cultures and Communities: Heritage and Sustainability will be held in a hybrid format, allowing for on-site or remote participation. The working languages are Portuguese, English and Spanish.
