CONCILIARE in an open class as part of the “Reflections on Visual Culture” series in Batalha Cinema Centre

The CONCILIARE—Confidently Changing Colonial Heritage project will present, on April 29 (10:00 a.m., Room 2), one of the sessions in the series “Reflections on Visual Culture,” organized by SOPCOM’s Visual Culture Working Group in partnership with Batalha Cinema Center, which is hosting the event.

The presentation of CONCILIARE, a research project funded by the European Union, aims to explore colonial legacies. Within this broad theme, the discussion will focus on a specific dimension in which the memory of colonialism manifests itself: the urban landscape of Porto, a setting populated by statues and monuments that celebrate Portuguese expansionism. Amid so many spaces, one work stands out, surrounded by controversy, where issues of gender and race intersect: the Monument to Portuguese Colonial Endeavor. The session will be led by Júlia Vilhena, Pedro Menezes, and Rosa Cabecinhas.

Under the motto “Investigating Gender, Dismantling Visuality,” this second edition of open lectures aims to “explore tools capable of challenging social paradigms related to gender issues, taking as its starting point the perspective of researchers involved in projects that study artistic and visual communication media” (Organization)

This series has already featured CECS researchers Nicoletta Mandolini and Alice Balbé, who presented the GENTEEL project—Graphic Novels Against Gender Violence (February 25), Susana Lourenço Marques and Luís Camanho – Womenphot: What They Saw/What We See, Women Photographers in Portugal 1860-1920 (March 25), and concludes on May 27 (starting at 10:00 a.m. in Room 2) with the project FILMASPORA—Popular Diaspora Films: Towards a New Cine-Geography of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with a presentation by researchers Maíra Zenun and Fernanda Belizário.
