The International Congress “Festivities, Cultures and Communities: Heritage and Sustainability” will take place on May 4, 5 and 6. The event is organised by the “Festivity – Festivities, Cultural Heritage and Community Sustainability” research project team and the full programme is available here.
The International Congress provides a meeting point and a place for debating the ongoing research on festivities focusing on the relationship between festivals and communities, encompassing festive cultures and identities, the (re)valorisation of tradition and the cultural and territorial sustainability. Methodological issues in the study of festivals, the relationship between festivals, culture and power, and the influence of technology and digitalisation will also be debated. Furthermore, given contemporary trends, the policies and processes of making festivals part of the heritage, their commodification and touristification will also be central topics of this conference.
The International Congress “Festivities, Cultures and Communities: Heritage and Sustainability” will be held in a hybrid format, allowing for on-site or remote participation. The working languages are Portuguese, English and Spanish.
