Communitas Debate: ‘Journalism and Disasters’

On November 29, at 4 pm, Communitas will organise a conversation on journalism and disasters in the Auditorium of the School of Engineering (UMinho-Gualtar, building 16). This event aims to provide an open space for informed discussions about civil protection activities and strategies, the media nature of environmental disasters, and science’s critical look at the impact of news coverage of extreme weather events on civil society.

News coverage of extreme weather events, especially television coverage, has grown in recent decades as a result of the negative impacts observed on biodiversity. The media that spend more time covering environmental disasters are often criticised for excessive spectacularisation, especially when the events involve human lives.

The debate will feature Júlio Melo, Commander of the Esposende Volunteer Fire Brigade and Coordinator of the Esposende Municipal Civil Protection Office, José António Pereira, RTP journalist and Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Beira Interior, and Márcia Franz Amaral, Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria and researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (Brazil). The moderator will be Alice Balbé, a researcher at CECS

Participation in this event is free and lasts approximately one and a half hours.
