The doctoral program in Communication Sciences is a proposal anchored in the competencies, capacities and resources developed by the group that constitutes the research center (CECS) several years ago and intends to respond to a need for an advanced region and the north of Portugal. At the same time, it is considered that this Course will also be a response to the Lusophone area, particularly Brazil and the Portuguese speaking African countries.
Of broad spectrum, the model of this Course is based on a solid formative base that supports investigations centered, either on objects of study of theoretical nature or objects of an empirical nature. In any case, it is a concern that the knowledge produced can stimulate and support the qualification of cultural, business and professional agents in the field of communication.
The doctoral program in Cultural Studies was the first in this area in Portugal to be accredited by the A3ES. As a result of a protocol of cooperation established between the University of Minho and the University of Aveiro, specifically through its organic units Institute of Social Sciences and Department of Languages and Cultures, the program will be promoted in 2017 only by the University of Minho.
The Ph.D. in Cultural Studies is aimed at training professionals in the areas of creation, promotion, animation, mediation and cultural dissemination, as well as responsible for public libraries, publishing houses, information production centers and cultural events, cultural associations, cultural leaders embassies, institutes, foundations, cultural centers, among others.
The doctoral program in Sociology seeks to promote interpretation, critical diagnosis and social intervention. An advanced training, based on interdisciplinarity and on the definition of research and service provision strategies, which contributes to a clearer reading and improvement of society. Professional skills are integrated into a strong and collective scientific component, both through the opportunity for social intervention and through the formulation and development of academic projects.
The doctoral program in Geography seeks to strengthen the practical research and autonomous production capacity in the map of scientific-technological, environmental, cultural, economic and political issues, related to urban, natural and demographic land planning and management. Geography is supported, in this cycle of studies, by innovation in the conceptual field and in applied knowledge.
The CECS is a multidisciplinary research unit, so it has researchers who are sometimes guiding or coordinating doctoral projects included in other doctoral programs.
