The II Visual Culture Meeting, dedicated to the subject of cultural memory and archives, will take place on 14 and 15 September, at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho.
This edition will feature more than a dozen communications and three conferences around the issue of memory in its interplay with various themes such as photography, film, television, advertising, journalism and archeology. On the 14th, Víctor del Río, professor of art theory at the University of Salamanca and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, will give a lecture on the technological dimension of the archive and its relationship with the machine. On the same day, the conference of Victor dos Reis, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and researcher of the Center for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (CIEBA), will focus on the photographic work of Afonso Chaves, an Azorean naturalist, geophysicist and meteorologist. On the 15th, Maria do Carmo Piçarra, postdoctoral researcher at the Communication and Society Research Center (CECS) and the Center for Film and Aesthetics-University of Reading, will present a conference dedicated to colonial violence in archive images.
The II Visual Culture Meeting also proposes diferente social and cultural activities. In the lobby of the Institute of Social Sciences, between 14 and 15 September, an installation promoted by Passeio, a platform of art and urban culture of the Communication and Society Research Center will be exhibited. On the 14th, the film A Toca do Lobo by Catarina Mourão will be screened at Livraria Centésima Página, with a debate animated by Paulo Cunha, Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Beira Interior, member of the directive board of AIM – Association of Image in Motion Researchers, of the Cineclube de Guimarães and member of the film selection committees of the International Festival Curtas Vila do Conde and the Porto / Post / Doc Festival.
The Visual Culture Meetings are organised by the Visual Culture Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (SOPCOM). This second edition has the Communication and Society Research Center (CECS) as a partner.
