António Bento Gonçalves has a degree in Geography and a Master’s in Physical Geography, from the University of Coimbra, and a Ph.D. in Physical Geography and Environmental Studies, from the University of Minho, where he is a professor in the Department of Geography of the Institute of Social Sciences (University of Minho, Portugal) since 1998.
At the moment, António Bento-Gonçalves, is director of the degree in Civil Protection and Territory Management (University of Minho), having already held the post of Director of the Ph.D. in Geography and Director of the Degree in Geography and Planning, at the same University.
He is currently President of the Portuguese Association of Geographers and was Vice President of RISCOS (Portuguese Association of Risks, Prevention and Safety) from 2010 to 2015.
Its scientific activity has focused on forest fires, soil erosion and degradation, and natural risks.
