António Bento-Gonçalves holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and a Master’s degree in Physical Geography from the University of Coimbra, and a PhD in Physical Geography and Environmental Studies from the University of Minho, where he is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Geography at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho (DGeo, ICS, UMinho, Portugal) since 1998.
António Bento-Gonçalves is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Social Sciences, Deputy Head of the Department of Geography and a member of the Programme Committee for the PhD in Geography. He was Head of the Department of Geography (2021 to 2025), a member of the Scientific Council, the Management Council and the Pedagogical Council of ICS/UMinho, and Director of the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Civil Protection and Land Management (2018 to 2021) and in Geography and Planning (2015 to 2017), having previously held the position of Director of the PhD Programme in Geography (2014 to 2015) at the same university.
He was also President of the Portuguese Association of Geographers from 2020 to 2022, and Vice-President of RISCOS (Portuguese Association for Risk, Prevention and Safety) from 2010 to 2015.
His research has focused on forest fires, soil erosion and degradation, natural hazards and civil protection.
