Joana Fillol is a journalist and a Ph.D. candidate. As a journalist she worked for ten years for Visão (a weekly news magazine). She also founded an online newspaper for 12-18 years old, Jornalíssimo, which was featured weekly in a primetime segment on the public television service broadcaster, RTP2.

As an academic, she is committed to researching media and news literacy, namely children and adolescents and their relationship to news. She received fellowships in diverse projects at University of Minho, where she also lectured on a Master programme.

Among other activities, she collaborates with MILObs – Observatory in Media, Information and Literacy, within the scope of which she was co-producer of the first Portuguese radio programme in Media Literacy, Ouvido Crítico.

Outside of academia, she created pedagogical resources in media and news literacy for the Portugal’s National Reading Plan.
