In 1985 she became the first PhD in History at the University of Minho, with a demographic study of the city of Guimarães and its rural environment (from 1580 to 1819), published in 1987. Full Professor retired of the University of Minho, Amorim created in this institution the research centre NEPS (Population Studies Center and Society) and the Masters in the History of Population, always focusing on the same subject – the Historical Demography.
She has also coordinated the creation of a database in order to integrate all the information organized by the parish records, from the sixteenth century to the contemporary, which is called the National Genealogical Repository at the University of Minho.
Her research include he demographic dynamics of the past four centuries in broad geographic areas.
