The researcher Maria do Carmo Piçarra gave a masterclass on May 6th, at the XVII Meeting of Cinema of Viana do Castelo (Teatro Municipal Sá de Miranda). The intervention of the researcher of the CECS, where she is part of the Research Group of Cultural Studies, was entitled “Ultramarine blues. Portuguese colonialism imagined in the cinema”.
When “Cinema Novo” was affirmed, what kind of images were broadcasted by the Portuguese colonies? How did Estado Novo propaganda filmed the “Portuguese way” of being in the world? And what revelation of the Portuguese colonialism was made by the cinema, as a weapon of liberation? In this conference, Portugal is “imagined” through the colonialism and the cinema. Thus, an analysis of the cinematographic representations is imposed by the propaganda.
