University of Minho has now an autonomous doctoral program in Cultural Studies

The CECS is the promoter of this PhD program, which involves two institutes of the University of Minho, the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS) and the Institute of Literature and Human Sciences (ILCH). The formal opening of the course is scheduled for the upcoming October. The first period of applications in now open, until June 19th.

Since 2010 the CECS has developed a third cycle course in Cultural Studies. It was implemented in the framework of a partnership with the University of Aveiro, ceased last year.

According to Moisés Martins, CECS directir, the Cultural Studies focus on communicational studies, as well as on gender studies, as well as on ethnic, postcolonial, lusophone, sociological, anthropological and feminist studies, including as well the literature studies: “It is precisely these areas, invested mainly by the Social Sciences, that have become the milestone of modernity. Because it is in them that we play today, to a large extent, the idea we have of the human”.

”O Olho de Deus no Discurso Salazarista” [“The Eye of God in the Salazarist Discourse”]: a book to analyze the present

José Bragança de Miranda (Universidade Nova de Lisboa [New University of Lisbon]) and Bernardo Pinto de Almeida (Univeridade do Porto [University of Porto]), presented the second edition of the book "O Olho de Deus no Discurso Salazarista" ["The Eye of God in the Salazarist Discourse"], by Moisés de Lemos Martins, coincided with the idea that the publication - whose first version was published more than 25 years ago - summons us to the analysis of the present. The iniciative took place at the Biblioteca Lúcio Craveiro da Silva [Lúcio Craveiro da Silva Library] in Braga (April 5, 21:30).

Implementation of DTT “penalized a lot Portugal”

Sérgio Denicoli has no doubts that "DTT was made not to work, to fail, to offer few channels and limited interactive services, in order to encourage the migration of the population to subscription TV services". The researcher of CECS was the guest of the RUM program "UM I&D" on 6 April. The author of the doctoral thesis on the implementation of Digital Terrestrial Television in Portugal regrets the consequences for the country of the whole process.

The last special issue of the European Journal of Communication (Vol. 32-1, 2017), runs as a direct outcome of the Symposium on Social Media, held in the Communication & Society Research Centre, on 27th May 2016, in the University of Minho, in the campus of Gualtar, Braga. Intitled "Social media – New challenges and approaches for communications research", the editorial is signed by Peter Golding (Northumbria University, UK), Karin Raeymaeckers (Ghent University, Belgium) and Helena Sousa (University of Minho/CECS).

4th Conference on Literacy, Media and Citizenship discusses new shapes of the public space

The 2017 edition of the Literacy, Media and Citizenship Congress, which will take place on May 5 and 6 at the António de Almeida Foundation in Porto, will gather more than 200 participants in an event on the theme "For a new awareness of public space". In the opening session will be José Manuel Pérez Tornero, professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona [Autonomous University of Barcelona]. During the fourth edition of the LMC Congress, a posthumous tribute will be made to José Manuel Paquete de Oliveira. It will take place, also, four workshops. The Congress Literacy, Media and Citizenship is organized by the Informal Group of Literacy for the Media, to which the CECS is associated.

The VII AIM Annual Meeting will take place from at the University of Minho, in Braga, from May 10th to 13th. This event will be co-organized by AIM - Associação de Investigadores da Imagem em Movimento - and CECS. In an interview to the CECS newsletter, David Renault, a Lecturer in the Faculty of Communication in the University of Brasília, in Brazil, and currently carrying out a Post-Doc Research project in the Communication & Society Research Centre, in the University of Minho, defends that “Media coverage about corruption may set new parameters of social behaviour”. The Argentinean Bettina Martino (Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, at National University of Cuyo, Mendoza) was the protagonist of the April session of the Permanent Seminar of Education for the Media (on 27th, 2:30 pm, ICS auditorium). The researcher developed her rationale from the perspective of Roger Silverstone, based on his concept of 'media polis', his views on the importance of education for the media, and his views on the limits of legal regulation.

Investigadores da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brasil) e do CECS participaram na iniciativa “As (in)visibilidades da violência de género: Brasil e Portugal em debate”, que se realizou no dia 5 de abril, e que se focou na discussão das situações de violência de género e no papel dos meios de comunicação social nos dois países. A sessão iniciou-se com o visionamento de dois documentários - “No devagar depressa dos tempos” e “Partir do Zero” -, ao que se seguiu o debate, que foi moderado pela investigadora do CECS Carla Cerqueira.

O seminário “Participação Civil na Governação da Internet”, que contou com a presença dos investigadores Janara Sousa e Sérgio Denicoli, realizou-se no dia 5 de abril e foi organizado pelo CECS e pela Unidade Operacional em Governação Electrónica, da Universidade das Nações Unidas, contado com o apoio do GT de Economia e Políticas da Comunicação da Sopcom. Foram apresentadas perspetivas de debate sobre a problemática da governação da internet, a partir do ponto de vista do Direito, por Joana Rita Abreu, e do ponto de vista dos Sistemas de Informação, por Luís Amaral.

It is available, in open access, the eBook “Arte, Políticas e Práticas. V Jornadas Doutorais Comunicação e Estudos Culturais” [Art, Politics and Practices. V Doctoral conference in Communication and Cultural Studies], held in UNiversity of Minho (Braga), on October 27 and 28, 2016. As in previous editions, the V Doctoral meeting brought together a wide range of students, from PhD and postdoctoral studies, from portuguese, spanish and brazilian universities. The ebook, that is edited by Zara Pinto-Coelho, Teresa Ruão and Nelson Zagalo, integrates 13 full texts of the 44 communications that were presented and discussed during the fifth edition of the conference.

CECS journals now in Open Media Scholarship platform

The semestral journals edited by CECS - Comunicação e Sociedade and Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies -, have just been included in the Open Media Scholarship platform. This new possibility of access to both publications fulfills the objective of promoting the dissemination of the two bilingual publications of the center, in an attempt to widen the audience of the two publications, into an international scope.

Vânia Tajra is the new PhD in Communication Sciences, having defended exams on April 26. The thesis is supervided by Sergio Denicoli and Joaquim Fidalgo, is entitled "Civil Internet Framework in Brazil: The transition to a model of digital democracy". According to Vânia Tajra, the conception of the work was intended to show that the construction of Brazil's Civil Internet Framework by democratizing access to the Internet and regulating it, besides disciplining the rights and duties of providers and users while maintaining freedom and democracy in the network.

Different voices in research and time, main topics of the 3rd PhD Seminar 201-2017

Rita Ribeiro ("Listening to the voices: narrating, interpreting, rescuing") and Joaquim Paulo Serra (“The problem of time in research") were the keynote speakers of the third session of the PhD Seminars 2016-2017, was held on April 21st, in the Social Sciences Institute of the University of Minho. Organized by the CECS and the Department of Communication Sciences of the University of Minho, these seminars aim to improve students' methodological skills, promote reflexivity in orientation practices, and exchange experiences among the various protagonists present in a doctoral process. The next seminar is scheduled for May 26 with Emília Araújo (CECS) and Filipa Subtil (ESCS).
