Next week, the Institute of Social Sciences will celebrate, at the suggestion of the Communication and Society Research Centre and the Department of Communication Sciences, the final lecture of Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins. This ceremony, signalling the Professor’s retirement due to the age limit, represents a very special moment of public recognition. It is an act of great joy and contentment, which expresses the consummation of a path in the public university and pays tribute to the singular achievements of those who excelled in the exercise of teaching functions and scientific leadership.
With extraordinary mobilisation capacity, Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins was the main promoter of the Communication and Society Research Centre. He directed the unit for almost 20 years, mentoring many projects, researches, and publications – that made this centre a hub of excellence. A notable figure in our scientific community, he was also, throughout his academic life, director of scientific associations – such as Sopcom, Lusocom and Confibercom – taking on numerous management positions in the university’s governance with a remarkable sense of commitment. With a profound knowledge of the higher education structure and science administration, he has also been a tireless public speaker on science policy.
Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins has marked, in a distinctive way, the personal and professional path of many students, teachers, and researchers. For the breadth of his critical thinking, the humanist sense of his gestures and the strategic vision with which he has inspired those working with him, he is today a major reference in the Social Sciences, Culture, Humanities, and Communication Sciences in Portugal.
On March 6, next Monday, he will deliver the final lecture entitled “The themes of my academic life – always rehearsing some fragment of the biography”. The ceremony will take place in the B1 Auditorium of Pedagogical Complex 2 (Gualtar campus), starting at 4 pm. It will have the interventions of Rui Vieira de Castro, Rector of the University of Minho, Paula Remoaldo, President of the Institute of Social Sciences, Felisbela Lopes, representing the Department of Communication Sciences and CECS, and Jean Martin Rabot, Professor of the Department of Sociology, who will introduce Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins.
The ceremony will be broadcasted online.
