Nominated by the effective members of the 8th section of the Class of Letters, researcher João Sarmento was approved by the Assembly of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences for the group of national corresponding members for Geography and Spatial Planning. Founded in 1779, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences is one of the oldest national scientific institutions in continuous existence.
João Sarmento is an associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Minho and an integrated member of the CECS in the Culture, Arts and Communities group. He takes up his post on 4 July and is the first CECS researcher at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
