More than 20 researchers from the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) from the University of Minho to Mozambique have contributed to strengthen ties between Portuguese-speaking countries and promote the development of Cultural Studies and Communication Sciences. The “Culture and Tourism” and “Lusocom” congresses were the motto for the presentation of numerous communications, the signing of cooperation protocols, the launch of the new volume of the journal Communication and Society and the conference proceedings of the XII Lusocom Congress, held in 2016 in the city of Praia in Cape Verde, the presentation of the documentary “No trilho de Malangatana”, and also to gather for the first time the project team FCT/Aga Khan.
All of these activities contributed, as the director of CECS, Moisés de Lemos Martins, to “fortify the network of cooperation in the vast geostrategic, transcultural and transnational space of the Portuguese-speaking countries”.
”Three years of the Paris Agreement – where are we?” in debate
"Three years of the Paris Agreement - where are we?" is the theme of the next debate promoted by the CECS think tank, Communitas. The discussion will take place on December 12, 2018.
International Congress on Culture and Tourism to “promote Cultural Studies in the Portuguese language space”
The "International Congress on Culture and Tourism: national development, peace promotion and rapprochement between nations" ended in Maputo, Mozambique, on November 27. With the participation of more than twenty researchers from the CECS, the scientific event sought to "promote the development of Cultural Studies in the Portuguese language space, a vast geostrategic transnational and transcultural region", as stated by Moisés de Lemos Martins, director of CECS and president of the scientific committee.
III Meeting of Visual Culture:
The III Meeting of Visual Culture, dedicated to the theme "Images between Generations", will take place on December 5 and 6, at the Lusófona University of Porto. More than a dozen CECS researchers will be involved in this scientific event in panels on digital culture, image, visuals, cinema, memory, among other subjects.
IV FILM: “What competencies for the Digital Revolution?”
The IV FILM - Informal Forum on Media Literacy with the theme "What competencies for the Digital Revolution?" Will take place next December 6, at the National Council of Education, in Lisbon.
Lecture “Sense of leisure to grow old” with Manuel Cuenca Cabeza
On December 3, at 3:00 p.m., in the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, there will be a lecture "Sense of leisure while growing old". Manuel Cuenca Cabeza is the guest speaker.
Creative Methodologies for Research
Workshops on Creative Methodologies for Research I will take place on December 4 and 5. Module I, entitled "In the Third Half of the Text: a creative writing workshop in and for research in social science", will begin at 2:00 p.m. , in the ICS. In the same room, at 9:00 AM the following day, module II will take place: "Workshop of Creative Scientific Illustration: how to (re) mix art, imagination and social science".
”Journalists can not be dismissed from this discussion regarding business models”
The exercise of journalism has been permanently challenged by technological provisions and challenged by social conditions. Increasingly, in the current situation, the profession has also been threatened at the corporate level by the financial and economic difficulties that threaten its sustainability. The bankruptcy of the traditional business model has put journalistic companies under pressure, affecting not only the resources necessary for the mission's performance but also forcing journalism to redefine its field and ethical and deontological practices.
International Conference “Contemporary Challenges to Forensic Genetics in Society” by Helena Machado
Forensic genetics applied to the social sciences and life sciences was the theme that led to the three days of the International Conference on Contemporary Challenges to Forensic Genetics in Society organized by the CECS Exchange project. In an interview, Helena Machado, coordinator of the project and researcher at CECS, made a positive assessment of the event, as well as announced some ideas for upcoming project events.
2CN-CLab Meetting “Cultural Projects in Network from the Ibero-american Cultural Charter”
The Regional Northern Culture Directorate and the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture decided to join the Communication and Society Research Centre of the University of Minho in the organization of the 2CN-CLab Meetting “Cultural Projects in Network from the Ibero-american Cultural Charter”.
CECS presented ECREA 2020 proposal in Lugano
The closing session of the ECREA 2018 conference ended on Saturday (3 November), with the formal presentation of the next conference to be held in Braga in 2020. At the time, Helena Sousa, a CECS researcher and president of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, made public the video-invitation prepared in partnership by the Rectory of the University of Minho and the CECS.
