Dynamics of Brazilian cultural collectives
There are many challenges for structuring, organizing and sustaining the careers of young artists, groups and small cultural entities in Brazil. The present context gives even more dramatic contours to its quest for affirmation and permanence. It is these challenges that will be addressed by Romulo Avelar in the next Permanent Seminar promoted by POLObs on March 7, at 2:30 pm, in the ICS meeting room.

(De)Othering. Deconstructing Risk and Otherness in Media scapes: Lampedusa
Gaia Giuliani, the Principal Investigator of the FCT funded project “(De)Othering. Deconstructing Risk and Otherness: hegemonic scripts and counter-narratives on migrants/refugees and ‘internal Others’ in Portuguese and European mediascapes”, provided a background about the project focusing on mediascapes, the construction of otherness (migrants, refugees and “internal others”) in the context of borders and its societal impacts.
RLEC (Vol. 6, nº 2): Call for papers on “Resignifications of festivities and community identities”
Editors: Rita Ribeiro, Manuel Pinto (Communication and Society Research Centre, University of Minho, Portugal) & Maria Erica de Oliveira Lima (UFC, Rede Folkcom, GP Folkcomunicação Intercom, Brazil) In this edition of the Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies (RLEC) contributions are accepted that analyse and question the dynamics associated to traditional festivities in terms of the relationship with local communities and changes to contemporary societies. It is interesting to discover and understand how the festivities were originally created and celebrated, the contribution of the festivities to shaping their communities, the relationship between the festive celebration and community identities, contemporary reconfigurations and uncertainties involved in such cultural manifestations, and how scientific knowledge and reflexive communication strategies can contribute to ensuring the sustainability of local communities and their festivities.

Exhibition of the film “The History of Eternity”
The PhD in Cultural Studies at the University of Minho promoted the exhibition of the award-winning film The History of Eternity on February 1, 2019, at 4:00 p.m., in the auditorium of ICS, followed by debate with moderation by Ivna Borges da Costa and participation, via Skype, the director, producer and screenwriter, Camilo Cavalcante.

Between 28 February and 28 March are open the call for FCT PhD Scholarships 2019. 950 scholarships will be awarded and the Communication and Society Research Centre will be available as a host institution.
Mafalda Oliveira: new PhD on Communication Sciencies
The Ph.D. proceedings of Mafalda da Silva Oliveira on Communication Sciences carried out on February 28, at 10:00 a.m., in the Institute of Social Sciences. The thesis, supervised by Jean-Martin Rabot, has the title “Internet use by seniors: uses and gratuities”. The candidate obtained the highest mark of this university: very good unanimously.
Patrícia Silva: new PhD in Sociology
The Ph.D. proceedings of Patrícia Maria Teixeira da Silva on Sociology was held on February 19, at 2:00 p.m., in the Institute of Social Sciences. The thesis, supervised by Alice Matos and Roberto Martínez Pecino, has the title “Old Social Networks, New Means of Communication: the importance of Social Networks and the use of the Internet for the Quality of Life of 50+ year olds”.
