Bosch Car Multimédia and the University of Minho started another phase of their Research and Development consortium, which is already considered the largest university-company partnership in Europe. At this stage, the consortium will have an investment of 26.3 million euros, resulting from an investment agreement between the two entities and the Portuguese Investment and Foreign Trade Agency, representing the Portuguese State. The Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) maintains the existing partnership and participates in two projects of the current consortium – Factory of the future and Easy Ride -, with the collaboration of Teresa Ruão, CECS Vice-Director, Sandra Marinho, professor of UMinho and integrated researcher of the centre, and Sónia Silva, contractor researcher of the consortium and doctoral student at CECS.
Antena Aberta program live from UMinho
Antena 1, CECS and the Sopcom Radio and Sound Media Working Group mark World Radio Day with a special broadcast from the Antema Aberta program, live from the University of Minho's Gualtar campus. On February 13, between 11 am and 12 pm, the public radio microphones will give a voice to students and the academic community.

CECS researchers train postcoloniality at D. Maria II Secondary School
“The narratives of history and postcoloniality. Myths, concepts and issues” is the generic title of two short-term training actions (ACD), which will be taught by CECS researchers to 2nd and 3rd cycle History and Portuguese teachers (basic and unified), at the Centre Association of Braga-Sul School Association. The ACDs are scheduled for January 31st and February 7th, between 18h00 and 21h00, at D. Maria II Secondary School, in Braga.
“Being young, today! Challenges, problems and consequences in the era of digital social networks”
“Being young, today! Challenges, problems and consequences in the era of digital social networks" is the generic title of two sessions that will be given by Pedro Costa, a CECS researcher, to young people in the 2nd and 3rd cycles (basic and unified), in the António Feijó School Group, in Ponte de Lima. The two sessions are scheduled for February 11, at 10:30 am and 2:15 pm, respectively. The initiative arises within the framework of the International Day of the Safe Internet 2020 and aims to warn of the various dangers of the uses of the Internet.

ECREA 2020 – Record number of submissions
ECREA 2020 has received the highest number of submissions ever for the European Communication Association conference. In total, 2020 submissions have been made - 1770 individual submissions to sections, temporary working groups and networks, and 50 panels (each with five participants).

Over the past few decades, cinema, advertising, photography, literature, news, textbooks, among other media, have shaped our perceptions of “us” and “others”, often contributing to the reinforcement of stereotypes and prejudices among the most diverse human groups, but also for the questioning of such stereotypes and the construction of new canons.

Call for Papers: PhD programme in Communication Studies’ final conference
Democracies are under threat in many parts of the world. The emergence of authoritarian and illiberal political forces, and the rise of intolerance in political discourse can be linked to a variety of factors. These include mistrust in political institutions, which in turn has been exacerbated by rampant economic inequality and injustice. Also, populist and xenophobic forms of communication in digital spaces are fueling fear and hatred. Declining diversity and pluralism in mainstream journalism and debate also contribute to the fragile condition of both older and younger democracies. Further, decreasing interest in political news renders citizens less effective in dealing with the forces that shape their lives.
