Bosch Car Multimédia and the University of Minho started another phase of their Research and Development consortium, which is already considered the largest university-company partnership in Europe. At this stage, the consortium will have an investment of 26.3 million euros, resulting from an investment agreement between the two entities and the Portuguese Investment and Foreign Trade Agency, representing the Portuguese State. The Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) maintains the existing partnership and participates in two projects of the current consortium – Factory of the future and Easy Ride -, with the collaboration of Teresa Ruão, CECS Vice-Director, Sandra Marinho, professor of UMinho and integrated researcher of the centre, and Sónia Silva, contractor researcher of the consortium and doctoral student at CECS.

Democracies are under threat in many parts of the world. The emergence of authoritarian and illiberal political forces, and the rise of intolerance in political discourse can be linked to a variety of factors. These include mistrust in political institutions, which in turn has been exacerbated by rampant economic inequality and injustice. Also, populist and xenophobic forms of communication in digital spaces are fueling fear and hatred. Declining diversity and pluralism in mainstream journalism and debate also contribute to the fragile condition of both older and younger democracies.
