
1st PolObs Meeting on Local Cultural Policies
PolObs is organising the 1st PolObs Meeting on Local Cultural Policies on December 12 at 2.30pm at TEMPO - Teatro Municipal de Portimão (Small Auditorium). To mark the 50th anniversary of 25 April 1974 and on the way to the 50th anniversary of the first elections to elect local bodies after the Carnation Revolution, which took place on 12 December 1976, this platform is organising the ‘Meetings on Local Cultural Policies’, which will always take place, in a decentralised way, on 12 December and 12 June of each year, from 15h00 to 18h00.
Sessão Ágora de Cá_ O que pode a arte? ‘What can museums do? What can we expect from museums?’
On 10 December, at 6.30pm, the fifth session of the Ágora de Cá cycle, from the series ‘What can Art do?’ will take place at zet gallery, with the sub-theme ‘What can museums do? What can we expect from museums?’. In this debate, we propose rethinking together the social function of the museum, not as something closed or predefined, but rather as a continuous construction, a space for debate, open to antagonisms and contradictions.
‘Public Funding of Journalism’ Meeting
On 18 December, at 11am, PolObs and Communitas are organising a meeting on the theme: ‘Public Funding of Journalism’, through the Zoom Platform. The event proposes a discussion on support mechanisms for possible public funding measures for private media. The topic has been on the public agenda for some time and, with a government proposal currently on the table, its topicality is growing, as is the need to discuss the possible virtues and risks of public support programmes for private media.
José Afonso and José Carlos Capinam: Unsuspected poetic encounters to the sound of the guitar
On 5 December , at 5 pm (Portugal), the seminar ‘José Afonso and José Carlos Capinam: Unsuspected poetic encounters to the sound of the viola’ will be held via Zoom platform, with the participation of Professor Edilene Matos and the moderation of Professor Moisés de Lemos Martins.
Seminar ‘University Extension: challenges and potential for formulating training policies in culture’
The seminar ‘University Extension: challenges and potential for the formulation of cultural training policies’ will take place on 10 December at 3pm as part of the PolObs Culture 2024 Seminar Cycle - Connecting Doctoral Projects with Cultural Policies. The event will be broadcast via Zoom here.
Interview with Rafaela Granja: the E-MONITORING project
‘E-MONITORING: Electronic surveillance in the criminal justice system: projected futures and lived experiences’ is one of the most recent projects taking place at CECS. The research, coordinated by Rafaela Granja, is the result of FCT's Restart programme.
MILObs seminar ‘Disinformation and young people: building a critical evaluation tool’
On 4 December, starting at 2pm, MILObs will host researcher Sandra Moura (Centre for Communication, Tourism and the Arts at the Federal University of Paraíba - Brazil) for another edition of the MILObs seminars. The session is entitled ‘Disinformation and young people: building a critical evaluation tool’ and will take place in person at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho (laboratory 008). Admission is free.
Ece Canli elected board member of ATGENDER
Ece Canli, researcher at CECS, was elected as board member at the general assembly of the ATGENDER 24 conference. ATGENDER, the European Association for Gender Research, Education and Documentation brings together academics, professionals, activists and institutions in the field of women's, gender, transgender, sexuality and queer studies, feminist research, sexual and women's rights, LGBTQI, equality and diversity. Founded in 2009 by key players in the field of gender, feminist and women's studies in Europe, it is today one of the largest and most recognised bodies in the field, through its individual and institutional members. New Release: International Yearbook of Lusophone Communication 2023/2024: Lusophonies and Decoloniality
In a partnership between CECS, LUSOCOM and SOPCOM, the International Yearbook of Lusophone Communication 2023/2024 has just been launched. This edition is co-ordinated by Carlos Camponez and Madalena Oliveira and is on the theme of ‘Lusophonies and Decoloniality’. More information here
Simon Ayogu’s PhD exams
Simon Okechukwu Ayogu's doctoral dissertation in Communication Sciences will be held on 20 January at the University of Minho's Institute of Social Sciences, at 2.30pm. The thesis, supervised by professors Luís Cunha and Rita Ribeiro, is entitled ‘Transnational migration and (in)security: Challenges, threats and vulnerabilities of the African immigrants in Portugal’.
Octávio Neto: New Doctor in Communication Sciences
Octávio Santiago Neto's PhD exams in Communication Sciences were held on 16 December at the University of Minho's Institute of Social Sciences, at 2.30pm. The thesis, supervised by Professor Maria Rosa Soares Pedrosa Cabecinhas, is entitled ‘The construction of prejudice against the people of the Northeast: journalism, social stereotypes and writings’.
Open class ‘Studies in the History of Portuguese America from the perspective of material culture’
On 12 December, at 5pm, an open lecture will be held on the theme: ‘Studies in the History of Portuguese America from the perspective of material culture’. The session, organised by Andreia Durães, will be led by Maria Aparecida de Menezes Borrego in Building 3, room 2.05 of the University of Minho's Gualtar Campus, with free admission.
New Doctor in Communication Sciences: João Pacheco
João Pedro Magalhães Pacheco's PhD exams in Communication Sciences took place on 3 December at 2.30pm in the Sala de Atos. The thesis, supervised by Felisbela Lopes, is entitled Political Communication in a context of crisis - the case of the Covid-19 pandemic in Portugal.
Open Class ‘Analysing social networks: notes on a methodological path’
On 11 December, at 20:00, in room 2.08 of Building (CP) 2 on the University of Minho's Gualtar Campus, an open lecture will be held on ‘Social network analysis: notes on a methodological path’.
