Semiotics Working Group meeting ‘What is Semiotics for?’
The meeting of SOPCOM’s Semiotics Working Group will be held on 13 June in the Sala de Atos of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. The theme of this event is ‘What is Semiotics for?’ and it seeks, through a ‘questioning and detective-like gaze’, to understand and discuss the realities raised by the Anthropocene/Capitalocene and the complex processes of remythification that we are currently experiencing.

New Publication: ‘Communicating human and non-human otherness’
Edited by Passeio's coordinators, Helena Pires and Zara Pinto-Coelho (CECS - Centre for Communication and Society Studies/University of Minho), together with Luísa Magalhães (CEFH - Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies/Portuguese Catholic University), the book ‘Communicating Human and Non-Human Otherness’ addresses the generic theme of the ‘Palgrave Studies in Otherness and Communication’ series - that is, studies on alterity and communication - from the perspectives of urban culture and post-humanist studies.

Ana Catarina Bessa Rodrigues' PhD Viva in Communication Sciences took place on 31 January in the Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho, at 2pm. The thesis, supervised by Zara Pinto Coelho, is entitled ‘Witches, elves and sorceresses: Female representations in fantasy cinema’.
New doctor in Communication Sciences: Mateus Dellarmelin
Mateus Luan Dellarmelin's PhD exams in Communication Sciences took place today, 27 January. The thesis, supervised by Jean Rabot, André Lemos and Moisés Martins, is entitled "Materiality(ies) of Online Friendship in the Context of the Use of Social Networking Sites from the Perspective of Older People" and was argued in the Sala de Atos of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho.
Jorge Garrido: New Doctor in Cultural Studies
Jorge Rafael Martins Garrido's PhD Viva in Cultural Studies took place today, 27 January. The thesis, supervised by João Sarmento, is entitled ‘Mozambique: democracy, culture and peace’ and was argued in the Hall of Acts of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho.
Simon Ayogu: New Doctor in Sociology:
Simon Okechukwu Ayogu's doctoral exams in Sociology were held on January 20 at the University of Minho's Institute of Social Sciences, at 2:30 p.m. The thesis, supervised by professors Luís Cunha and Rita Ribeiro, is entitled “Transnational migration and (in)security: Challenges, threats and vulnerabilities of the African immigrants in Portugal”.
