
CONCILIARE / CECS at the Audiovisual Heritage Meetings in Maputo
Between 27 and 31 October, the city of Maputo, Mozambique, will host the third edition of the Audiovisual Heritage Meetings, this year dedicated to the theme ‘Cinema and the independence of the PALOP countries’.
Passeio Anniversary- ‘Ten years is a long time’.
To mark its 10th anniversary, Passeio is organising a meeting on 29 October at the Audiovisual and Multimedia Centre of the University of Minho (building 13 on the Gualtar Campus).
Conference: With the Son in Her Arms: The Sculptures of Humility and Piety
On 28 November, at 6pm, the auditorium of the D. Diogo de Sousa Archaeology Museum will host the conference ‘With the child in her arms: The sculptures of Humility and Piety’. It will be presented by Albertino Gonçalves, a lecturer and sociologist with extensive experience in the sociology of culture and art.
MILObs Seminar “School is no place for mobile phones.” Is that really true?
On 16 October, at 2:30 p.m., MILObs is organising the webinar " ‘School is no place for mobile phones’ Is that so?". The online session, which is free to attend but requires registration here, will discuss the place of mobile phones in schools: in Portugal, but also internationally, at a time when prohibition has been the most widely reported approach.

1st ICS / Passeio Workshop – Bodies in Motion

Project ‘Dynamics, Cases and Comparisons (1945-1980)’ rated ‘Excellent’ by FCT
The collective research project Internationalised Humanity: Dynamics, Cases and Comparisons (1945-1980) (Ref. PTDC/HAR-HIS/6257/2020), coordinated by José Pedro Monteiro (CECS researcher until December 2024), has just been classified by FCT (funding entity) as ‘Excellent’.
Workshop “Reader Responses to Comics: Cognitive and Neuroscientific Approaches”
The GENTEEL project - Graphic Novels Against Gender Violence - is organising, in 6 November, in conjunction with SOPCom's Visual Culture Working Group, the workshop ‘Reader Responses to Comics: Cognitive and Neuroscientific Approaches’. It will take place in the ICS(Gualtar) conference room. The morning session (at 11:00 a.m.) will be led by Giorgio Busi Rizzi, from Ghent University. At 2:30 p.m., Nicole Ruta (KU Leuven) will conduct the session.

The book Festas de Mouros e Cristãos. Culturas Festivas Ressignificadas (Festivals of Moors and Christians. Festive Cultures Reinterpreted), edited by Rita Ribeiro and Emília Araújo, is published today.

Edited by Carlos Camponez, Rogério Christofoletti & Juan Carlos Suárez Villegas, the book Communication, Ethics and AI: Dialogues on Challenges and Perspectives in the Digital Age brings together a selection of texts presented at the eighth edition of the Media Ethics Conference, which took place in Coimbra in 2024.

A new volume of Passeio's Notes from everyday life collection has just been published, platform which now celebrates its tenth anniversary. Fragmentos do urbano (Fragments of the Urban) is edited by Helena Pires and Zara Pinto-Coelho.
Nova Doutora em Ciências da Comunicação: Dalvacir Andrade
On October 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., Dalvacir Xavier de Oliveira Andrade's doctoral exams in Communication Sciences were held in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. The thesis, supervised by Helena Sousa and André Lemos, is entitled “Youtubers and Migration: The socio-technical communication dynamics of the digital work of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal.”
Communication and Diversity Seminar – ‘Intercultural communication and contemporary Portuguese-African photography’
On 7 November, at 11:00 a.m., in Room 1.15 (CP2, Gualtar Campus), professor and researcher Fernando Gonçalves (State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) will present a reflection on contemporary Luso-African photography and intercultural communication.
Aggregation exams of José Gabriel Andrade
On 21 October, José Gabriel de Oliveira Andrade Júnior's aggregation exams in Communication Sciences will take place in the Sala de Atos of the ICS . The examinations will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the assessment of the scientific curriculum and report, and at 3:00 p.m., there will be an assessment of the lesson entitled ‘Transmedia Territorial Communication: Challenges, Strategies, and Technologies for Community Dialogue in the Global Portuguese Language Space.’
PhD Viva of Pedro Cumbane
Pedro Elias Cumbane's doctoral examinations in Communication Sciences will take place on 18 November 2025, at 9:30 a.m., in the Sala de Atos of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. The thesis, supervised by Susana Pimenta and Estevão Filimão, is entitled ‘Cultural Studies: a disciplinary area in Mozambique: contexts, protagonists and practices.’

The thesis, supervised by Moisés de Lemos Martins and Jean Martin Rabot, is entitled ‘The Workers' Party (PT) in the face of Bolsonaro's offensive on social media since the 2018 Brazilian presidential elections.’

Marina Maria Soares Silva's PhD Viva in Communication Sciences will take place on 17 November 2025, at 10 a.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho. The thesis, supervised by Luís António Santos, is entitled ‘Combating misinformation: the representations of primary and secondary school teachers as a basis for intervention.’
#UMediaTalks 2025 | Series of Conversations on Current Media Issues
The Current Issues in Communication and Media course, part of the Master's Degree in Communication Sciences at the University of Minho, is promoting #UMediaTalks – a series of talks on current media issues. The series takes place on Tuesdays in November (4, 11, 18 and 25), at 4 pm (Mainland Portugal time), in Building 02 | Room 1.02, and brings together researchers from Portuguese and international institutions to discuss challenges and trends in contemporary communication.
