Migrant and Anti-Racist Activism in Portuguese
On 17 March, at 5 p.m. (Lisbon time) and 2 p.m. (Brasília time), the event ‘Migrant and Anti-Racist Activism in Portuguese’ will screen and discuss three short films produced as part of the MigraMediaActs project, based at the Centre for Communication and Society Studies (CECS) at the University of Minho. Based on the films, migrant and anti-racist activism in Portugal will be discussed, as well as the respective repertoires of action and communication in the public space.
Sessão de Apresentação “Trajetos Comunicantes: A Matéria da Escuta”
On 21 February, there will be a presentation of the book Trajetos Comunicantes: A Matéria da Escuta (Connecting Commutes: The Matter of Listening), produced in partnership with Braga 25 Portuguese Capital of Culture. The publication is the result of the artistic project Trajetos Comunicantes, in which Audire and CECS were partners.
Call for Chapters: “Feminist Discursive Ecologies: Care, Media, and Slow Resistance”
Over the past decades, feminist media and cultural practices have shaped discursive ecologies in which symbolic production, care and collective organisation intersect. Zines, independent presses, film and video collectives, podcasts, community archives, feminist urban networks and digital platforms constitute spaces for the production of meaning, memory and solidarity. This edited collection proposes to examine these practices as feminist discursive ecologies that articulate cultural production and community sustenance. By shifting attention to the material, temporal and organisational conditions of media production, the book interrogates how these ecologies enable the continuity of feminist action in contexts marked by precarisation, digital acceleration and the intensification of anti-gender mobilisations.
Open Class “Viewing and Discussion of the Documentary 13th”
On 27 March (Friday), at 9:00 a.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences, on the Gualtar Campus of the University of Minho, there will be an open class dedicated to viewing and discussing the documentary 13th. Directed by Ava DuVernay, the documentary offers an in-depth analysis of the prison system in the United States, with particular attention to the criminalisation of African-American populations. The session will be led by Rafaela Granja, as part of the Social Studies of Crime II course, the Master's in Crime, Difference and Inequality, and the ForMAT: Forensic Methylation Analysis Toolsets project.
New PhD in Communication Sciences: Francisco Conrado
On 24 February 2026, at 2 p.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, Francisco Conrado Araújo Silva Filho's doctoral examinations in Communication Sciences were held. The thesis, supervised by Luís Santos, is entitled ‘The interaction between performative social and traditional media statutes in the formation of discourse: Metamorphoses, centrality and exception in a relational analysis of events on Twitter/X over seven years.’
New PhD in Communication Sciences: Pedro Ribeiro
On 24 February 2026, at 9:30 a.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, Pedro Eduardo Oliveira Ribeiro's doctoral examinations in Communication Sciences were held. The thesis, supervised by Rosa Cabecinhas, is entitled ‘Lifestyle magazines, objectification of the body and transmedia affection: meanings, discourses and intersectionalities.’

On 20 February 2026, at 9:30 a.m., Alessandra Nardini's doctoral exams in Cultural Studies were held in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. The thesis, supervised by Moisés Martins, Isabel Macedo, and Marcio Serelle, is entitled ‘The music video and the audiovisual aesthetic experience: narratives of resistance and activism in Portuguese-speaking countries.’

Cláudia Filipa Macedo Cunha’s PhD Viva in Sociology took place on 5 February, at 2:30 p.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. The thesis, supervised by Alice Matos and Roberto Martinez-Pecino, is entitled ‘Social determinants of cognitive function in adults aged 50+: the role of formal social participation and (dis)satisfaction with non-participation'.

The Seminar on Communication, Territory and Technologies will take place on 12 March at 4 p.m. in room 2.07 of the CPII at the University of Minho, under the theme ‘Application of digital communication in the context of a pandemic, the case of Uruguay’.
