Culture, Arts, Communities and Participation Cicle
The first session of the ‘Culture, Arts, Communities and Participation’ series of meetings will take place on 31 March. This initiative is organised by the CECS’s ‘Culture, Arts and Communities’ research group, under the coordination of Manuel Gama and Micaela Altamirano. This session, on the theme “Participatory practices in Guimarães: Ondamarela and A Oficina”, will take place at the Fornos da Cruz de Pedra Arts and Crafts Centre in Guimarães and begins at 3.30 pm. It will be facilitated by Micaela Altamirano and will feature guests Marta Silva (A Oficina) and Ana Bragança (Ondamarela).
3rd Meeting of PhD Students in Communication Sciences at the University of Minho
The 3rd Meeting of PhD Students in Communication Sciences at the University of Minho will take place on 10 April, organised by the student representatives – Paulo Couraceiro (3rd year), Elizabete Mercês (2nd year) and Norberto Sá Valente (1st year) – in conjunction with Sara Pereira, the programme director.

The Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies has opened a call for papers for Vol. 13, No. 2, with the theme ‘Colonialism and Public Space: Memories in Dispute,’ until 15 May. The editors for this issue are Pedro Menezes (CECS, University of Minho, Portugal), Alana Castro de Azevedo (CegeSoma/State Archives of Belgium, Belgium) & Sebastian Zuñiga (CES, University of Coimbra, Portugal).
Call for Chapters: “Feminist Discursive Ecologies: Care, Media, and Slow Resistance”
Over the past decades, feminist media and cultural practices have shaped discursive ecologies in which symbolic production, care and collective organisation intersect. Zines, independent presses, film and video collectives, podcasts, community archives, feminist urban networks and digital platforms constitute spaces for the production of meaning, memory and solidarity. This edited collection proposes to examine these practices as feminist discursive ecologies that articulate cultural production and community sustenance. By shifting attention to the material, temporal and organisational conditions of media production, the book interrogates how these ecologies enable the continuity of feminist action in contexts marked by precarisation, digital acceleration and the intensification of anti-gender mobilisations.
Visual Culture Seminar organised by CECS and the SOPCOM Visual Culture Working Group, featuring Viviane Vedana
On 9 April, starting at 5.00 pm, the CECS Visual Culture Seminar will take place, in conjunction with the SOPCOM Visual Culture Working Group, and will be streamed online. This time, the guest speaker is Viviane Vedana, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, who will give a presentation entitled Anthropology and sound: some reflections on ethnographic research and audiovisual production.
Aggregation Exams of António José Bento Gonçalves
On 10 March, in the ICS Assembly Hall, the aggregation exams in Geography (specialising in Physical Geography and Environmental Studies) were held for António José Bento Gonçalves, with the assessment of the lesson entitled "Geography of forest fires: Forest fires in Portugal before 1960." New PhD in Communication Sciences: Elaine Trindade
On 9 March 2026, at 2 p.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, Elaine Cristina Azevedo da Trindade's doctoral exams in Communication Sciences were held. The thesis, supervised by Moisés Martins, Isabel Macedo, and Maria da Luz Correia, is entitled ‘The image gallery of the Virtual Museum of Lusophony: aesthetic experience, memory, and imagination.’
New PhD in Cultural Studies: Daniel Alencar
Daniel Escorel Alencar's PhD exams in Cultural Studies will took place on 6 March 2026, at 2 p.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho. The thesis, supervised by Rosa Cabecinhas and Manuel Gama, is entitled ‘Cultural policies for multilingualism in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP)’.
