CECS awards excellence award to doctoral theses, held at the University of Minho, in Communication Sciences

 

Communication & Society Research Centre (CECS) has decided to award former PhD students Maria da Luz Correia and Liliana Oliveira with the CECS Excellence Prize in PhD Thesis, considering the doctoral thesis presented in the University of Minho, in the years 2013-2015. Maria da Luz Correia defended her PhD in Communication Sciences under the title “Intermittences in the contemporary visual culture” and Liliana Oliveira “Universities and public participation in science. Perceptions and practices among scientists, communication professionals and Portuguese and Spanish citizens”.

The evaluation committee of this award has also decided to grant a special honour to Lurdes Macedo for her PhD thesis “From the diversity in the world to the diversity in the lusophone space: reinventing a geocultural community in a network society” and to Elsa Costa e Silva for her work “Pluralism and diversity in the media in Portugal – the political blogs in the net”.

Besides of the awardees and honour mentions, the jury also considered the work of Manuel Gama, Pedro Mota Teixeira and Sara Balonas.

In this award, 38 former CECS PhD students were considered, both in Communication Sciences and Cultural Studies. As suggested by the rules, the coordinators of the three research lines – Media and Journalism, Cultural Studies, Communication, Organizations and Social Dynamics – propose the best PhD thesis, thus inviting an evaluation committee an assessment about the quality of those works. The president of the committee is CECS Director Moisés de Lemos Martins, followed by Xosé López García (University of Santiago de Compostela), Filipa Subtil (Polytechninc Institute of Lisbon), Hélder Bastos (University of Porto), Isabel Ferin (University of Coimbra), Paulo Serra (University of Beira Interior), Tito Cardoso e Cunha (University of Beira Interior) and José Bragança de Miranda (New University of Lisbon).

CECS signs Agreement with the Portuguese Commission for Migrations

The CECS is now part of a 29 institutions list, called Higher Education Network for Cultural Mediation (RESMI), which is in deep articulation with the Portuguese Commission for the Migrations. As CECS signed a mutual agreement with both associations, it is now understood that all efforts must be implement to process intercultural practices, as well as research tools to analyse this situation.

”7-Day Week with the Media” had a strong participation of UMinho

The fifth edition of the "7-Day Week with Media", organized by the GILM-Informal Group on Media Literacy, to which the CECS is associated, ended on May 9. In this edition, there were more than 50 initiatives, seven of which from the University of Minho. It has already been established that GILM will ensure a new initiative in 2018. Thus, the sixth edition will take place from May 3 to 9, 2018.

300 proposals submitted to the III International Congress on Cultures: Interfaces of Lusophony

Three hundred proposals were submitted to the III International Congress on Cultures: Interfaces of Lusophony, which will take place at the University of Minho from November 23 to 25 and is organized by the CECS. The authors of the proposals come from Europe, the Ibero-American space and other countries of the Portuguese official language, especially in Africa.

150 researchers participated in the VII AIM Conference

150 researchers participated in the VII AIM Conference

The organization of the IV Literacy, Media and Citizenship Congress, to which the CECS was associated, considers that the event overcame the organization expectations. Organized by GILM - Informal Group of Literacy for the Media, the Congress took place between May 5 and 6, at the Engenheiro António de Almeida Foundation, in Oporto, with more than 200 participants. The proceeding book will be published in November 2017.

Literacy, Media and Citizenship Congress overcame the organization expectations

Portuguese and Spanish researchers met on the Pontevedra campus of the University of Vigo to discuss the future opportunities for research in Public Relations. It was during the XII International Congress in Public Relations, held between May 3 and 5, whith the CECS actively participation in organization of the event, which brought together more than 50 people.

Research opportunities in PR, one of the key topics of a conference co-organized by the CECS

Päivi Rasi, the Finnish researcher, Chair Person of the Finnish Society on Media, who studies "groups who do not want to have access to the digital world", gave a seminar at the CECS on "Media representations of senior citizens Internet and ICT users and non-users" within the framework Permanent Seminar on Education for Media. Taking advantage of the presence of the researcher in Portugal, the CECS interviewed her, and the Professor at the University of Lapland (Finland) talked about her work on the elderly and the relationship they have with technology and the Internet, the reasons which led her to carry out this research period at the CECS, among other subjects. The next session of the Permanent Seminar on Education for Media is scheduled for June 7, with Pablo Andrada Sola, a Chilean who develops research work at CECS.

Interview with Päivi Rasi

Filip Vostal, author of the book "Accelerating Academy: The Changing Structure of Academic Time", attended the seminar "Academic Timescapes. The use of time in the academy and the influence on the production of knowledge ", organized by CECS and LAB2PT, with the communication" On temporal regimes of knowledge production ", which was held at the ICS UMinho, on the afternoon of May 22. The investigator from the Czech Republic, who said that we are no longer in a moment for a timeless time academy characterized by long times to be dedicated to reflexivity, participation and pondering. As it happens with all the other organizations, academy is now a place of passage and the boundaries between capitalist dynamics and academic life have become more or less diluted. He discussed with colleagues from the University of Minho and the University of Aveiro - who were invited to the event and who supported some of those positions -, emphasizing the interest in counting on the contributions of the social and human sciences to the practices of science and knowledge management in Academia and science, attending, first and foremost, to the diversity and multiplicity of times.

The researcher Maria do Carmo Piçarra gave a masterclass on May 6th, at the XVII Meeting of Cinema of Viana do Castelo (Teatro Municipal Sá de Miranda). The intervention of the researcher of the CECS, where she is part of the Research Group of Cultural Studies, was entitled "Ultramarine blues. Portuguese colonialism imagined in the cinema".

CECS hosted Communication Workshop from the IGPM UMinho/Bosch project

40 abstracts were submitted for presentation at the 3rd Conference “Paths in the Knowledge, Science and Technology in Portugal”, organized by CECS and the Working Group on Knowledge, Science and Technology, of the Portuguese Sociology Association. The conference is scheduled for 7th-8th September 2017, in the Gualtar campus of the University of Minho, in Braga. Ulrike Felt, from the University of Wien and currently serving as President of EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology), will be the Keynote Speaker. The event will also host a roundtable with civil organizations in these areas as well.

CECS hosted a seminar on Research-Action methodologies

Investigadores de diferentes áreas do conhecimento, da Universidade do Minho e de vários países de língua oficial portuguesa reuniram-se no dia 9 de maio, no Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade do Minho, para discutir questões relacionadas com a qualidade na Pesquisa-Ação, com ênfase particular na ética, participação e democratização do conhecimento. A iniciativa pretendeu promover a colaboração entre os membros do CARN (Collaborative Action Research Network) e Estreiadiálogos (Rede Lusófona de Investigação-Ação Colaborativa) no aumento do potencial da Pesquisa-Ação para expandir a participação e democratização do conhecimento em vários cenários. Este Seminário também pretendeu preparar a participação da Estreiadiálogos na primeira Assembleia Global, que decorrerá a 16 de junho em Cartagena (Colômbia) e na qual participará a investigadora Ana Maria Silva, na qualidade de Secretária da Estreiadiálogos e membro do CECS.

Foram recebidas 40 propostas para a 3ª Conferência "Rumos da Sociologia do Conhecimento, Ciência e Tecnologia em Portugal", da Secção Temática em Conhecimento, Ciência e Tecnologia da Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia (APS), evento que decorre nos dias 7 e 8 de setembro, na Universidade do Minho (Braga). A iniciativa, que resulta de uma parceria entre o CECS e a referida secção da APS, contará com a presença de Ulrike Felt, da Universidade de Viena e Presidente da EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology), e uma mesa-redonda com representantes de organizações públicas e privadas locais.

eBook “Teias da rádio: ensaios e reflexões sobre as políticas do setor”

It is available in free access the eBook “Teias da rádio: ensaios e reflexões sobre as políticas do setor”, by Pedro Costa.  It is a publication that stems from a Master's dissertation and that addresses the effects that the Radio Law, revised in 2010, has caused on the radio operators and their respective radio content. In addition, a chapter is presented reading data emanating from the performance of the Regulatory Entity for Social Communication, in 2016, which draw conclusions about the evolution of the sector over a longer time period, in addition to providing a set of ten interviews with protagonists and thinkers of the radio medium in Portugal.

CECS researcher Anabela Carvalho is one of the editors of the special issue of the Brazilian journal "Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente" ["Development and Environment"], subject to the title "Communication and Climate Change". The issue is now published. This journal features also two more articles from CECS researchers: "Climate change on Twitter: the emergence of the media and politics" (Alice Dutra Balbé and Anabela Carvalho), and "Behaviors and perceptions about public participation in science and technology and climate change: The cases of Portugal and Spain" (Liliana Oliveira and Anabela Carvalho).

”The industrial fabrication of lie” and “Scientific territories and time” in the last session of the PhD Seminars 2016-2017

The 2016-2017 edition of the PhD Seminars has come to an end. Organised by CECS and the Communication Sciences Department of the University of Minho, two topics were at stake: Filipa Subtil talked about “The industrial fabrication of lies” and Emília Araújo, disserted about "Scientific territories and time". This years’ session of the PhD Seminars has started on 24th February 2017, with Mariana Lameiras and Isabel Macedo, with the presentation “Research paths in young scholars”. On 24th March, Maria José Brites participated in the session “Participative research towards youth and news” as well as Manuel Gama with “Mapping cultural practices”. On 21st April, Rita Ribeiro presented “Listen to the voices: telling, interpreting, saving stories” and Paulo Serra “The problem of time in research”.

In the framework of the PhD in FCT in "Communication Studies: Technology, Culture and Society", the third formation of the cycle of complementary actions took place on May 13, with a training on "Publication and transfer of knowledge", by the researcher Rui Silva. The next session, scheduled for June 2, will be on "Bibliographic research, citation standards and digital reference management (Endnote/Mendeley)", with researcher and teacher Alberto Sá.

New PhD programmes in Cultural Studies validated by A3ES – applications open

The new PhD degree in Cultural Studies has been totally renewed and improved, certified by A3ES – Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior (Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education). The PhD in Cultural Studies is a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary program coordinated by the Social Sciences Institute (ICS) - in association with CECS  -, in collaboration with the Institute of Arts and Humanities (ILCH). The applications are open (1st period: until June 19; 2nd period: until September 8, for remaining vacancies).

The Young Scholars group of Sopcom, with several research members of CECS, is now promoting its 3rd Summer School. Based upon the title "Research in Communication: experiences and expectations", the event will take place in the upcoming days 28,29 and 30 June 2017 in Oporto's Universidade Lusófona. Final registration is due on 5th June 2017.
