CECS awards excellence award to doctoral theses, held at the University of Minho, in Communication Sciences

 

The Scientific Committee of the III International Conference on Cultures: Interfaces of Lusophony approved 275 proposals to be presented at the event. It is expected a wide participation of scholars from Europe and Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Angola, Brazil and Mozambique. The conference will provide six plenary sessions whose goal is to promote the interdisciplinary debate about key subjects in the Cultural Studies and Communication fields, from cultural diversity, Portuguese language, science policy and science communication, digital literacy, communication, arts to popular culture.

According to Abino Rubim (Federal University of Bahia), one of the Keynote Speakers in the plenary session about Policies for Communication, Culture and Arts, these events contribute to overcome misunderstandings and promote academic cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries. The conference will be held at the University of Minho from November 23th to 25th 2017 and results from a partnership between the University of Beira Interior and the Federal University of Bahia.

CECS is now part of the University of Minho Working Group on Research Data Management

Following an invitation by SDUM, the University of Minho Documentation Services, and the UM Vice-Dean for Research, Communication & Society Research Centre is now part of a 8 institutions Working Group that will hand, by the end of the upcoming July, to António Cunha, the University of Minho Dean, several recommendations on Research Data Management. Besides CECS, the Working Group is joined by the Biological Engineering Research Centre, Life Sciences and Health Institute, Physics Centre, 3B’s Research Centre, Psychology Research Centre, the Political Economy Research Centre and Algoritmi Research Centre.

Denis McQuail has died

Denis McQuail has died

Denis McQuail, a Emeritus Professor at the University of Amsterdam and Honoris Causa Doctor at the University of Ghent, one of the world's leading scientists in social communication, died on June 25 at the age of 82. Closely linked to the CECS, which was part of the permanent scientific external advisory committee, In 2004 he was held the Cátedra Lloyd Braga, from Universidade do Minho, having given a conference with the following title: “Publication in a Free Society: The Problem of Accountability”. His book "Theory of Mass Communication", is considered a true classic in the Communication Sciences area. For the Board Diretcion of the CECS, the death of this figure of the Sciences of the Communication was faced "with enormous sadness".

2CN-CLab workshop held in Coimbra

“Cultural Heritage”, the 2CN-CLab workshop, was held on 29 and 30 June at the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, in Coimbra. Organized by CECS, this is part of the Post-Doctoral Research project conducted by Manuel Gama, in collaboration with Spanish and Brazilian cultural institutions. The next meeting will be in Évora, on 13 and 14 JUly, will be supported by the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo, Évora and will be subordinated to the theme "Cultural mediation".

Holy Maria Figure and Polish Catholic Church, key topics in this morning’s Sociology of Religion Seminar

During the Seminar "School dropout: a problem that requires a new vision", held at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, on 23 June, the professor and researcher of the Mackenzie Presbyterian University (Brazil), Italo Francisco Curcio, stressed the urgency that public education policies should integrate phenomena of school exclusion, insisting on the idea that this diagnosis should be carried out individually and "as early as possible in educational institutions". This event was organized by CECS, in partnership with the Portuguese Association of Information Systems and the Brazilian Association of Information Systems.

“School dropout must be evaluated as soon as possible in the teaching institutions”

The seminar "Vulnerability: senses and limitations" was held on June 22nd and 23rd, in the ICS-UMinho videoconference room. The debate focused on the figure of "vulnerability", with the focus placed on the current context of technological mobilization, and the crisis of the human. This initiative brought together researchers from the CECS and the Federal University of Minas Gerais, resulting from a partnership between both institutions that existed for several years.

Seminar on “Vulnerability: senses and limitations” brought together researchers from CECS and UFMG

Pablo Andrada, a PhD candidate from Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, was the guest speaker of the last session of the Permanent Seminar on Media Education. The researcher studies how Media Literacy is framed in Chilean universities' study plans of future child education teachers. According to Pablo Andrada, Media Literacy is often mistaken for ICT competencies. Questions such as the messages' origins and its values can and should be addressed with the current graduates and by future child education teachers in their work.

Pablo Andrada was the guest speaker of this year last session of the Permanent Seminar on Media Education

Vanessa Marcondes, post-doctoral researcher at CECS, was the guest speaker at the latest Permanent Seminar on Communication and Diversity, which was held on the afternoon of June 13, at the ICS of UMinho. Her intervention focused on a study concerning The "others" in Público: Representations of the "refugee crisis". The study presented raised issues surrounding the visibility and silencing of refugees in the area of news treatment.

Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies, vol. 4 nº1 – Flows and paths in visual culture

The volume 4, number 1 da Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies is available. This edition, coordinated by Moisés de Lemos Martins e Zara Pinto-Coelho, is subordinated to the theme “Flows and paths in visual culture”. There is included the concept of “flow” to designate the theme of this issue, which is dedicated to visual culture, since flow is a key metaphor for life. Flow and life tend to develop in a constant tension between balance and imbalance, and between harmony and disharmony. Life experiences are stages over the course of a lifetime.

The call for papers for the second issue of vista, a semestral publication in the area of ​​Communication Sciences and in the field of image studies, is now open. The deadline for submission of articles is due on September 8, 2017. Acceptance notifications will be sent by October 10, 2017. This issue is edited by Isabel Macedo (CECS) and José Gomes Pinto (CICANT) and seeks to explore the role of media and material, textual, photographic, audiovisual, digital, etc., archives in the reconstruction of memory. The editors will be looking forward for articles that, from different disciplinary areas, deal with memory, images and archives. vista was created in 2015 by the Working Group on Visual Culture of the Portuguese Association for the Communication Sciences (SOPCOM).

It is now open the call for papers for the upcoming e-book "Publi-cidade e comunicação visual urbana" [Advertisement and the city: urban visual communication], due on 30th July, by the Advertisement Working Group of Sopcom, the Portuguese Association for the Communication Sciences, and edited by the CECS. According to the editors Helena Pires (CECS - University of Minho) and Francisco Mesquita (Fernando Pessoa University), this publication intends to "gather contributions from academics and non-academics which enphasize the role of advertisement in the cities, where multiple identities and communicative processes are entangled in our daily routines".

Seminar addressed issues on media consumption and hypermedia in the Portugal and Spain

As part of the ongoing Erasmus Teaching Mobility programme, Xosé López Garcia and Ana Isabel Rodríguez Vászquez, both from the Spanish University of Santiago de Compostela, participated at June 27, in a seminar on media consumption and hypermedia in the Portugal and Spain, which took place in the Social Sciences Institute of the University of Minho. This was an initiative of CECS, and the research groups “Media and Journalism” and “Communication, Organizations and Social Dynamics”, as well as the Communication Sciences Department.

Pedro Pinto Neves: new PhD in Communication Sciences

For Pedro Pinto Neves, a new PhD in Communication Sciences, the main contribution in his thesis is a concretization of an Agency perspective of videogame design. So that, the thesis describes design research carried out on videogame design and Agency: “This design research process was for theory-building: the construction and evaluation of a design artifact as a theory-instrument, containing prescriptive knowledge”. The thesis is supervised by Nelson Zagalo, Lecturer in the Department of Communication Sciences at University of Minho and a researcher in CECS, and Leonel Caseiro Morgado, Lecturer with Habillation  at Open University (Universidade Aberta), and is entitled  " An Exploration of Agency in Videogames".

Complementary formation ations of the PhD in Communication Studies came to an end

The cycle of complementary training actions of the PhD FCT in "Communication Studies: Technology, Culture and Society", carried out since February of this year and organized by the CECS, is now completed. Researcher Alberto Sá, who spoke on "Bibliographic research, citation standards and digital reference management (Endnote / Mendeley)", was the formator of the last action, that was accomplished at June 2nd. Organized by the CECS, these actions are addressed to the students of the four editions of FCT PhD in “Communication Studies: Technology, Culture and Society” and are intended, preferably, to doctoral students of the course, but also to postgraduate students of institutions belonging to the consortium.
