CECS researchers unveil a practical guide of Media Education
Patrícia Silveira, Clarisse Pessôa, Diana Pinto, Simone Petrella (all from CECS – University of Minho) and Amália Carvalho have just published an online toolkit for Media Education practices in schools. Tratar os Media por Tu – Guia prático de Educação para os Media [Handling wisely with Media – a Practical Media Education Guide], edited by the Portuguese Minister of Education, addresses both children and teachers from early stages of education up to mandatory levels. DGE and CECS have been partners in the publication of several books in the literacy and media field.“The World is an imprisoned place”
Joaquim Costa is a Lecturer in the Sociology Department of the University of Minho and a researcher at CECS, thus integrating the Cultural Studies research group. Costa has recently published “Delirium Literarium”, by Chiado Editora. This is a novel based on an alter ego, according to a Madeira-born character called Ramiro, also serving as a Lecturer. Ramiro felt that his university was no longer a good place to work, so he got fired, which he saw it as a real joy. Ulrike Felt, Lecturer in the University of Wien and President of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST), will deliver her keynote “Academic line-ups: On life-lines, time-lines and trajectories towards the future” on 7th September, in the Social Sciences Institute of the University of Minho, in Braga, on the framework of the 3rd Conference “Paths in the Knowledge Sociology, Science and Technology in Portugal". CECS will organize the III International Congress on Cultures: Interfaces of Lusofonia that will be held at the University of Minho from November 23 to 25, 2017. The congress results of a partnership between the University of Minho-CECS, the University of Beira Interior (Portugal) and the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil), and will have 275 proposals for presentation, where researchers from European and Portuguese-speaking countries will be present.Transmedia Literacy International Conference: call for proposals until 31 October
It is now open until October 31st, the call for papers to the Transmedia Literacy International Conference, which will be held in Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) from March 22th to 24th, 2018. It is already guaranteed as keynote speakers the presence of David Buckingham, Divina Frau-Meigs, and Alejandro Piscitelli. This initiative ends the European Transliteracy project, which began in June 2016 and intends to understand the relevance of media practices in the adolescents lives from eight countries. “Cultural Mediation”, in the framework of the 2CN-CLab Meeting "Culture, Cooperation and Networks", was held on 13 and 14 July at the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo, in Évora. Organized by CECS, this is part of the Post-Doctoral Research project conducted by Manuel Gama, in collaboration with Spanish and Brazilian cultural institutions. The next meeting will be in Viana do Castelo and Vila Nova de Cerveira, on 7 and 8 September, and will be co-promoted by Municipality of Viana do Castelo and Cerveira Biennial Art Foundation.CECS researchers participate in the Digital Literacy and Education Report published by the European Literacy Network
As part of the ongoing COST Action IS1401, CECS researchers Maria José Brites (coordinator) and Luís Pereira participated in the publication of the latest Digital Literacy and Education Report, an outcome of the European Literacy Network. The CECS was present at the Encontro Ciência'17, which was held at the Lisbon Congress Center, from July 3 to 5. The participation of the center was made in two moments: one, in which the researcher Elsa Costa e Silva spoked about Communication of Science; And another on the theme "Literacy for the Media as a value for communication and citizenship", by Sara Pereira. The deadline for submitting articles to issue 32 of the "Comunicação e Sociedade" journal, dedicated to the theme 'Photography and Gender', coordinated by Maria da Luz Correia and Carla Cerqueira was extended until the next 16 August. Edited by CECS, "Comunicação e Sociedade" is a peer reviewed journal and operates in a blind double review process. Each submitted paper will be distributed to two reviewers previously invited to evaluate it, according to the academic quality, originality and relevance to the objectives and scope of the theme of this issue of the journal. Alexandra Leandro is the new PhD in Communication Sciences, havind defended her doctoral exams on July 24 (2:30 p.m.), in the ICS (Social Sciences Institute) Sala de Atos of the University of Minho, in Braga. The thesis is supervised by Teresa Ruão, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication Sciences at University of Minho and a researcher in CECS, and is entitled "The Communication of Socially Responsible Organizations: an analysis of social responsibility reports". The new PhD stresses that "this study has been focused in the will of understanding the value of internal corporate social responsability on what encompasses the strategic choices in communication that must be made by companies".Brasilino da Costa Godinho: PhD in Cultural Studies
Brasilino da Costa Godinho defended his doctoral exams in Cultural Studies, on July 5, at 2:30 p.m., in the Room of Academic Acts, in the building of the Rectory of the University of Aveiro. The thesis is entitled "Patriotism, iberism, internationalism in the work of Antero de Quental", and was supervised by Maria Manuel Baptista (University of Aveiro). Sara Pereira, researcher at CECS and member of the Media and Journalism Group, was elected for the third time as Director of the Communication Sciences Department of the University of Minho (Social Sciences Institute). Sara Pereira was elected with 14 out of 19 possible votes. This is a two-year mandate. The voting took place on 5th July 2017.
