
Cycle of Conversations ‘Cities, Data and Journalism’
CECS and the University of Minho are joining Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade da Beira Interior in organising the cycle of talks ‘Cities, Data and Journalism’. The first meeting will take place in Lisbon, with the motto ‘A city built with data’, on 26 February (18:00, NOVA Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities), followed, on 27 March, by UMinho (Institute of Social Sciences), with ‘Open government data: challenges and applications’, and ending on 29 April at UBI (Faculty of Arts and Letters), with the talk ‘Data journalism in Portugal: Realities and Perspectives’.
PolObs organises Municipal Culture Conference in Matosinhos
The Matosinhos Municipal Culture Conference will be held on 8 March, starting at 9.30am, at the Matosinhos Town Hall, as part of the Matosinhos Culture 2034 Strategic Plan, organised by PolObs (Science, Communication and Culture Policy Observatory). Four working groups will be set up with a maximum of 20 participants from the region, focussing on four themes: ‘Matosinhos Culture 2034’, ‘Cultural Citizenship’, ‘Municipal cultural dynamics in the last decade’, and ‘Transectoriality of Culture’.
Seminar programme ‘Algorithms, work and inequalities’ – second session
The second edition of the ‘Algorithms, work and inequalities’ seminar series will be held on 27 February. The session will take place in the B-Lounge (Gualtar campus library) and will feature presentations by Ana Paula Marques (CECS/University of Minho), with the presentation Platformised careers and (intra/inter)generational challenges: a sociological look, and Iolanda Fontaínhas (CICS.NOVA UMinho / University of Minho), with Digital intimacies: reconfigurations of privacy between work and home. Evento: Visões (De)Coloniais: Diálogos em Cultura Visual, Alteridades e Artivismos
On 28 April, SOPCOM's Visual Culture Working Group is organising the event ‘Colonial (De)Visions: Dialogues in Visual Culture, Alterities and Artivisms’ at the Lúcio Craveiro da Silva Library in Braga. The initiative aims to explore the intersections between visual culture, memory, colonial heritage and activism through guided tours, debates and film screenings. This one-day event, whose working languages are Portuguese and English, will bring together researchers, artists and activists to foster critical debates about the colonial past and its impacts on contemporary society. The programme includes a guided tour of colonial monuments in Braga, a round table and the screening of short films produced as part of the MigraMediaActs project.
New Publication: ‘Communicating human and non-human otherness’
Edited by Passeio’s coordinators, Helena Pires and Zara Pinto-Coelho (CECS – Centre for Communication and Society Studies/University of Minho), together with Luísa Magalhães (CEFH – Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies/Portuguese Catholic University), the book ‘Communicating Human and Non-Human Otherness’ addresses the generic theme of the ‘Palgrave Studies in Otherness and Communication’ series – that is, studies on alterity and communication – from the perspectives of urban culture and post-humanist studies.
New Doctor of Geography: Joel Lameco
Joel António Lameco's PhD Viva in Geography took place on 28 February in the Conference Room of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho, at 2.30pm. The thesis, supervised by Maria José Caldeira and Virgínia Barata Teles, is entitled ‘The Porosity of the Mozambican Land Border - the impact of illegal immigration on border communities and national security. The case of Mozambique's border with Tanzania’.
Seminar of Visual Culture: “Strategic Transmedial Conspiracy Narratives: Mechanisms of Visual Communication and Meaning-Making”
Following on from the cycle of Visual Culture seminars (organised by Passeio and CECS in partnership with SOPCOM's Semiotics Working Group), the class entitled ‘Strategic Transmedial Conspiracy Narratives: Mechanisms of Visual Communication and Meaning-Making’ will be held on 23 April (6pm).

Elizabeth Machado Veloso’s PhD Viva in Communication Sciences will be held on 6 May at the University of Minho’s Institute of Social Sciences, at 2pm. The thesis, supervised by Elsa Costa e Silva and Helena Sousa, is entitled ‘Social Representations in Parliament on Big Tech – The Debate on Personal Data Protection in Brazil (Law No. 13,709 of 2018)’.
PhD Viva of Crisvalter Medeiros
Crisvalter Rogério de Araújo Medeiros’s PhD Viva in Communication Sciences will be held on 8 April at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, at 2pm. The thesis, supervised by Sara Pereira and Manuel Pinto, is entitled ‘The educommunication interface and extension actions: a study of a higher education institution in Brazil (IFPB)’.
PhD Viva of Lídia Carvalhaes
Lídia Carvalhaes’ PhD Viva in Cultural Studies will be held on 1 April at the University of Minho’s Institute of Social Sciences at 2pm. The thesis, supervised by Helena Pires and Manuel Gama, is entitled ‘Culture in Brazilian Federal Institutes: implications and possibilities for Sustainable Community Development’.
