Conference discussed public inclusion policies and empowerment and rehabilitation of people with disabilities
The International Conference “Disability Policies: Challenges and Agenda-setting” was held at the University of Minho, and was organized by CECS in partnership with the Center for Research in Political Science of EEG-School of Economics and Management and the Office of Inclusion of University of Minho. The event, aimed to observe what is happening ten years after Portugal have signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and to mark the International Day of People with Disabilities.Anabela Carvalho is a member of the Scientific Panel of the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change
Anabela Carvalho, a researcher at CECS, was appointed by the Minister of the Environment to join the Scientific Panel on the National Adaptation to Climate Change [Painel Científico da Estratégica Nacional de Adaptação às Alterações Climáticas] (ENAAC 2020). Anabela Carvalho includes a list of twenty names, which was chosen by the relevance and curricular adequacy, the sectoral and thematic representativeness, the geographic diversity of the institutions to which they belong, and gender equality.III Communication Workshop from IGPM CECS-UMinho/Bosch project

The International Congress "Europe as a space for Intercultural Dialogue and Mediation" has registered about one hundred work proposals submitted by national and international researchers from Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Brazil and Portugal. The event is organized by CECS in conjunction with other entities and will unleash a space of interdisciplinary debate on the contemporary challenges of contemporary society, addressing issues such as migration, diversity, intercultural communication and mediation in order to deepen the construction of more welcoming, inclusive and peaceful societies. The Cycle 2CN-CLab Talks took place on December 4, 5, 6 and 7, 2017, at Porto, Viana do Castelo, Coimbra, Lisbon, Évora and Faro, within the framework of the research project "Transnational Cultural Cooperation Networks" which is being developed, with the support of the FCT in Portugal, Spain and Brazil. Pedro Andrade, a researcher at CECS, has just signed a chapter of the book "Innovative Perspectives on Tourism Discourse", edited by Magdalena Bielenia-Grajewska (University of Gdansk, Poland) and Enriqueta Cortes de los Rios (University of Almeria), at the American publisher IGI Global. The chapter, entitled "Cultural e-Tourism Depicted by Digital Discourse: Innovative Mobilities at Urban e-Heritage Networks", and presents, at an international level, one of the components of the Mobile Culture for Tourism Communication [Cultura Móvel para a Comunicação Turística] project, co-coordinated by the author with Emília Araújo at the CECS. The book "Cyberculture, circumnavigations in transcultural networks of knowledge" ["Cibercultura, circum-navegações em redes transculturais de conhecimento"], coordinated by Helena Pires, Manuel Curado, Pedro Andrade and Fábio Ribeiro and edited in partnership by CECS and Edições Húmus, was presented at Espaço GNRation (Braga). The doctoral exams in Communication Sciences by Clarisse Pessôa were held on December 15, in the ICS (Social Sciences Institute) Sala de Atos of the University of Minho, in Braga. The thesis is supervised by Sara pereira (University of Minho), and is entitled “Media education in school context: action research with elementary school children”. According to the new PhD, the present research aims to understand the ways in which Media Education can be integrated into the formal contexts of learning, so as to contribute to the development of media skills among children.Matthias Hammann: new PhD in Cultural Studies
The doctoral exams in Communication Sciences by Mathias Hammann were held on December 12, in the ICS (Social Sciences Institute) Sala de Atos of the University of Minho, in Braga. The thesis is supervised by Jean-Martin Rabot (University of Minho), and is entitled “Narcissus, the architect of the void”. According to the new PhD, despite Narcissus' protests, "fortunately evil and death always prevail, and perhaps in time, the revelation of the vital principle of disunion mediated by a loving object may mow narcissistic ideals, remedy the existential poverty of today and allow the emergence of affection and thought".Haroldo Capote Filho new PhD in Communication Sciences
The doctoral exams in Communication Sciences by Haroldo Silva Capote Filho were held on December 5, in the ICS (Social Sciences Institute) Sala de Atos of the University of Minho, in Braga. The thesis is supervised by Moisés de Lemos Martins and Ana Melo (both from University of Minho), and is entitled “Argumentation, symbolic violence and meaning: the emerging Brazilian audience and the advertising discourse between the leap and the ritualized act”. With this investigation, the new PhD investigated the Brazilian advertisement speech from 2004 to 2014, questioning the attempts to reach the emerging middle class, sustaining that the advertising speech registers "an intention that seeks to reduce boundaries, and yet fixates distances in the same social environment".
