Passeio, in collaboration with Braga City Council (C.M.B), is organising the guided tour ‘Nights less white in Braga’ on February 22 at 6.30pm, as part of the ITINERARIUM – Knowing Braga for its heritage programme.
With a meeting point at Campo da Vinha (Praça Conde de Agrolongo), this tour will feature Raul Cerveira Lima, Helena Pires and Zara Pinto-Coelho and is justified as follows:
‘Light pollution – light at night of anthropogenic origin, with relevant impacts on ecosystems, the night sky and public health – has been increasing progressively and Braga is no exception to the trend, with the aggravating factor that the new dominant light is white. This increase, however, is neither desirable nor necessary. On this visit, we’ll talk about alternatives to current public and private lighting and how light pollution can be substantially reduced, restoring starry skies to the city, improving residents’ quality of life and benefiting local and regional biodiversity and stimulating a new way of looking, less dazzled and more attentive to urban cultural heritage.’
Raul Cerveira PS Lima (b. 1969) has been an Assistant Professor of Physics at the Escola Superior de Saúde do Politécnico do Porto (ESS | P.Porto) since 1998 and a member of the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) since 2021. In addition to publishing scientific articles (as author or co-author), taking part in conferences and teaching short courses on light pollution, he has also published press articles on this subject. He organises and collaborates in actions to raise awareness of light pollution and in defining policies and regulations for artificial light at night in Portugal and Europe.
The ITINERARIUM programme aims to promote knowledge of Braga’s heritage and is divided into four thematic axes: lost city; remembered city; lived city and experienced city.
According to the information provided by the City Council, the sessions are free of charge and those interested must register.
