The book As universidades e a participação pública em ciência (Universities and public participation in science), by Liliana Oliveira, has just been released.
According to the author, this work takes the participatory potential as an essential dimension to foster mutual learning between the public and the scientific community by sharing knowledge, perspectives, cultural, social and ethical values. This exchange encourages a more positive relationship between both. It can foster a more sustainable economic and social development and more consolidated citizenship. Thus, besides contributing to restoring the legitimacy of science and public confidence in it, it can lead to better results by including various types of expertise (scientific and non-scientific) in the knowledge production process and decision-making processes, with openness, transparency, plurality and citizen democracy (Fiorino, 1990; Stirling, 2008; Wesselink, Paavola, Fritsch & Renn, 2011).
