New publication: Development and Territorial Realities in Portugal

Today sees the launch of the book ‘Development and Territorial Realities in Portugal’ by Pedro Chamusca, which proposes “an integrated reading of the Portuguese territory, combining multiple disciplinary perspectives to unveil the country’s transformations, dynamics and characteristics. Starting with an analysis of the major historical transitions – from the 1974 Revolution to European integration – the demographic, economic and institutional transformations are analysed, such as population ageing, the tertiarisation of the economy and the growing concentration of population in metropolitan areas. Using a wide range of quantitative indicators and reflections from experts on cohesion, housing, border dynamics and digitalisation, a vivid portrait is built of the regional asymmetries that persist in Portugal. By confronting the utopias of ideal development with the practice of public policies, the text underlines the importance of critically interpreting statistics and recognising the gap between objectives and results. Seeking to challenge the reader to active citizenship and participation, it also outlines agendas for the future – from the digital and ecological transition to decentralisation and social inclusion – which invite you not only to understand the current challenges, but also to actively participate in building a more balanced, sustainable and resilient Portugal.”
