New publication: ‘The World at School. How to Boost School Media’

A new book has just been published (CECS-Uminho Editora) as part of the bYou project, entitled ‘O Mundo na Escola. Como Dinamizar Meios de Comunicação Escolares’ (The World at School. How to Boost School Media). Its editors are Sara Pereira, Daniel Brandão and Joana Fillol , who point out that this work “starts from the recognition of school media as privileged spaces for giving children and young people a voice and promoting media literacy in an educational context. Based on a study carried out in 12 primary and secondary schools as part of the bYou project, it analyses the role of these media in promoting participation, expression and critical learning about the media and the world. The book also brings together a set of strategies to foster and diversify the journalistic approach in school media, as well as various proposals and resources for their promotion. School media are presented here as laboratories of citizenship, capable of contributing to a more democratic, inclusive school that is prepared for the challenges of the digital age.

The book features contributions from Adriano Miranda, Andreia Lobo, Carolina Franco, Cátia Baros, Cátia Mendonça, Cláudia Santos, Daniel Brandão, Iolanda Ferreira, Joana Fillol, João Marques Franco, João Miranda, Luís Miguel Loureiro, Luís Pereira, Luísa Gonçalves, Manuel Pinto, Margarida Toscano, Maria João Cunha, Pedro Moura, Ricardo Fialho, Rui Barros, Ruben Martins, Sandra Marinho, Sara Pereira, Teresa Calçada and Teresa Pombo.

The bYou project – ‘Study of young people’s experiences and expressions in the media’ began in 2021 and was completed in March 2025. It was one of four winning projects in the field of Media and Communication in the competition promoted in 2020 by the Foundation for Science and Technology for the Funding of Scientific Research and Technological Development Projects. The project team, led by Sara Pereira, gave a voice to (and listened carefully to) what almost 1,400 children and young people aged between 11 and 18 from across mainland Portugal had to say about the media.
