CECS is the Portuguese partner in the new European research consortium Forensic Methylation Analysis Toolsets (ForMAT), funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme.
Coordinated by the University of Santiago de Compostela, the project aims to develop innovative tests in the field of forensic genetics, particularly applicable to criminal cases, the identification of disaster victims and the legal assessment of the age of asylum seekers. ForMAT focuses on DNA methylation (DNAm) and the use of epigenetic markers.
The consortium consists of 11 institutions and brings together expertise from various countries and disciplines. Members include leading universities, police forces and forensic institutes, committed to expanding, testing and validating forensic tools, while analysing their social and ethical implications.
The CECS research team is coordinated by Rafaela Granja.
