Pablo Andrada was the guest speaker of this year last session of the Permanent Seminar on Media Education

Pablo Andrada, a PhD candidate from Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, was the guest speaker of the last session of the Permanent Seminar on Media Education. The researcher studies how Media Literacy is framed in Chilean universities’ study plans of future child education teachers. According to Pablo Andrada, Media Literacy is often mistaken for ICT competencies.

“Media training of future teachers doesn’t exist in Chile”, said the researcher, exemplifying with the lack of references to media literacy competencies in the universities’ study plans. The media is seen as didactic tools, and not as a subject of study, concluded Pablo Andrada. Questions such as the messages’ origins and its values can and should be addressed with the current graduates and by future child education teachers in their work.

For Pablo Andrada, documents such as the Portuguese Media Education Guidance, which had contributions by two researchers from CECS (Manuel Pinto and Sara Pereira), can play a very important role in promoting the implementation of Media Education in schools.
