This month edition of the Permanent Seminar on Media Education had Päivi Rasi has guest speaker. The lecturer of Media Education at the University of Lapland presented the preliminary findings of an ongoing research on media representations of seniors as ICT users.
“To study media representations is a new domain for me”, recognized Päivi Rasi, more used to study how older people deal with digital technologies. The researcher analyzed 121 pieces from three regional newspapers from Lapland, between January 2006 and October 2016. Päivi Rasi found three main representations: seniors as reluctant or limited consumers, as users of digital public services and as learners either enthusiastic or fearful about ITC.
The communication presented was titled “Media representations of senior citizens as Internet and ICT users and non-users”.
