The Observatory of Policies on Science, Communication and Culture (PolObs) of CECS presents the outcomes of the first phase of the study “Public funding for human resources training: PhD scholarships in Communication”. The project seeks to understand and analyse the context of the last decade in doctoral training in Communication Sciences in Portugal from the allocation of individual doctoral grants from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). It also aims to analyse the impact, the effects and the scientific return of public investment in advanced training.
The document presents a statistical and descriptive portrait from a database of 233 Communication Sciences PhD scholarship holders between 2010 and 2021, to whom a questionnaire survey was applied.
According to the study, the University of Minho leads the list of institutions with 57 scholarships awarded (24%), followed by the Nova University of Lisbon with 38 scholarships (16%) and the University of Aveiro with 32 scholarships (14%).
The project’s second phase consists of in-depth interviews and will start in March 2023. The study team is composed of Mariana Lameiras, Madalena Oliveira and Cláudia Dominguez.
