The GENTEEL project – Graphic Novels Against Gender Violence – is one of those selected for the Exploratory Projects in All Scientific Domains competition, launched in 2023 by the FCT.
Having been awarded second place in the Arts panel, it will be carried out by a research team that brings together academics with recognised experience in the fields of comic book studies, visual culture and gender studies, as well as significant experience in qualitative social science methodologies applied to the field of education. The team includes Nicoletta Mandolini as principal investigator, as well as Cristina Álvares (CEHUM – UMinho), Ece Canli (CECS – UMinho), Alice Balbé (CECS – UMinho) and Daniel Cardoso (Universidade Lusófona Lisboa).
This team’s proposal is to test the adoption of graphic novels as texts to be recommended or used to raise awareness of gender-based discrimination and violence in secondary schools in northern Portugal. Specific research questions include: Are graphic narratives able to increase knowledge and awareness on the topic of gender discrimination in adolescents and young adults? Do they promote processes of identification, empathetic reflection or affective responses in the reader? How do these processes vary according to gender and what effect do they have on raising awareness of the phenomenon of gender-based violence? What kind of mechanisms are activated by a discussion about graphic narratives, in terms of producing collective knowledge about gender violence?
According to the FCT, the Exploratory Projects competition is designed to promote innovative ideas by supporting exploratory research projects in all scientific fields. Research teams from higher education institutions, their institutes and R&D units; state or international laboratories based in Portugal; private non-profit institutions whose main purpose is R&D activities and other public and private non-profit institutions carrying out or participating in scientific research activities can apply for funding. Projects must have a maximum duration of 18 months.
