EurOmo (https://media-ownership.eu/), funded by the European Commission, is a consortium of higher education institutions and research centres. Its mission is to monitor media transparency in Europe, while also analysing media ownership and control. It is coordinated by the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg, involves around 100 researchers from 29 institutions and has so far analysed 750 media outlets and their shareholders (around 6,400).
This project has developed a tool for monitoring the risks to media ownership transparency in Europe. In this context, a searchable database of the most influential media owners in Europe has been built. It has also developed risk indicators, according to the dimensions analysed (economic, management, ownership, public policy and relations), in order to make this information more visible and operational.
EurOmo included two phases (a pilot in 2020/21 with 15 countries, followed by a renewal to include the remaining countries, and another in 2025, with all EU countries). CECS participated in the pilot phase, which developed the methodology, and in the 2025 phase, which updated the data.
The CECS team includes Elsa Costa e Silva (Principal Investigator), Joaquim Fidalgo, Luís Santos and Luís Loureiro.
