Apps and Young Adults: Contributions to a Mapping of Mediated Practices explores theories, practices, critiques, and perspectives on the use of mobile applications among individuals aged 18 to 30. The book, structured in three parts, begins with a theoretical basis on digitally mediated practices in young adults. The first chapter critiques digital media, analysing mobile applications’ symbolic nature. The exploration encompasses games, dating, health, and fitness, underscoring the necessary analytical commitment.
Subsequent chapters address gender dynamics, examining how young adults engage with self-monitoring and health apps, exploring gender differences in technology adoption and challenging constructions of gender and sexuality within media consumption practices.
The second part focuses on contemporary trends among young adults globally. Trend studies, a transdisciplinary field, analyse the digitalisation of daily life and platforms, exploring concepts such as “zeitgeist” to understand prevailing ideas. The last part analyses the future, providing insights into future scenarios related to the evolution of the digital landscape. Published as part of the MyGender project and supported by the Fundação paraa Ciência e a Tecnologia, the e-book aims to contribute to the field by combining theoretical rigour with practical insights and future-oriented analyses.
