How do children and young people connect – or disconnect – with the media and the world?
This book of proceedings brings together the main contributions of the bYou Congress: Children, Young People and the Media – (Dis)Connected Lives?, held at the University of Minho on 7 and 8 February 2025. The starting point for this event was the results of the research project bYou – Study of Children and Young People’s Experiences and Expressions of the Media, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, which analysed the media practices and cultures of young Portuguese people aged between 11 and 18.
In a context where the presence of screens is constant, but active participation in and through the media is still limited, this book promotes a critical reflection on the media cultures of children and young people. The book has three parts: the opening speeches, with Ana Beatriz Pereira and João Marecos in particular; a selection of 10 scientific articles by national and international authors; and, finally, the bYou Manifesto, which echoes the reflections and concerns shared during the congress, as well as a poetic text inspired by texts from the project and the event.
It is a work that contributes to the debate on children, young people and the media, in a commitment to promoting media literacy and civic participation among young people.
