‘In architectural discourse, it is common to distinguish between two dimensions in the concept of the city’s skin. A first understanding that encompasses physical exterior surfaces, vertical (such as façades, walls), horizontal (pavements, paths…) and more ephemeral constructions such as statues or gates. And another in which the skin is understood as a representational surface, which manages social interactions and expressions of identity, is part of cultural expression and can represent a set of values and beliefs (Plowright, 2018, pp. 3-4). (…)
Each city has its own unique skin, which not only shapes the visual appearance but also integrates history, stories, encounters and the way people imagine, inhabit and interact with urban spaces. (…)
In this collection, we’ve put together a set of micro-essays, written by researchers and professionals from different disciplinary and institutional backgrounds, which form part of the collection of original texts produced as part of the Passeio project.’
