This book is primarily intended for higher education students in the social sciences and humanities. The lessons learned from our professional careers in different cultural contexts, as well as debates inside and outside the classroom, were essential to the completion of this work. The empirical research we have carried out is addressed in some chapters, as we share the view that higher education should be constantly updated through scientific research. Thus, in this book, in addition to addressing some of the internationally renowned ‘classic’ authors, we also provide contact with scientific research carried out in different Portuguese-speaking countries. We have adopted this strategy with the aim of giving visibility to the knowledge produced in these contexts, emphasising the importance of situated knowledge that takes into account the different socio-cultural contexts in which it is constructed.Social psychology falls within the field of communication and cultural studies, encompassing different levels of analysis and constituting one of the cornerstones of communication sciences. In recent years, efforts have been made to integrate theory, contributing to growing transdisciplinarity. A solid cultural and humanistic education is essential for training communication professionals who are capable of critically analysing social reality, developing cross-cutting skills and creating better conditions for successful integration and adaptation to different social and work contexts, which are in constant flux, as well as the ability to actively intervene in the transformation of society. Social psychology as a scientific discipline helps to understand, analyse and critically discuss human communication in different contexts. As an introductory book, it aims to provide a solid theoretical reflection, through the deepening of some of the main concepts, in conjunction with a pragmatic perspective, through the analysis of practical cases and current issues.
