Communication and Diversity Seminar marks ten years of initiatives, reflection and intervention

The Communication and Diversity Seminar will celebrate its 10th anniversary on 22 September, at 3:30 p.m., at the Nogueira da Silva Museum in Braga. Under the theme “Ten Years, Many Voices: Communication, Diversity and Citizenship”, the event will review the work undertaken over the past decade and reflect on the challenges facing the future of research and intervention in this field.

The session will feature contributions from Jean-Yves Durand, Director of the Nogueira da Silva Museum; Madalena Oliveira, Director of the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS); Zara Pinto-Coelho, Head of the Culture, Arts and Communities research group; and Rosa Cabecinhas and Isabel Macedo, coordinators of the Seminar. Drawing on the participants’ different perspectives and experiences, the session will revisit some of the initiatives developed throughout the Seminar’s ten-year history, as well as the questions that have shaped this space for exchange, debate and the collaborative production of knowledge.

The programme will promote critical reflection on the role of communication in building more plural, inclusive and participatory societies, addressing topics such as cultural diversity, migration, citizenship, social representations, memory and inequalities. The session will also provide an opportunity to discuss new avenues of research and forms of collaboration between universities, cultural institutions and communities.

The Seminar is organised in partnership with the Virtual Museum of Lusophony and the European project CONCILIARE – Confidently Changing Colonial Heritage. The project examines the continuities and transformations of colonial cultural heritage in different European contexts and promotes participatory processes of reflection and co-creation centred on memory and public space.

At 5:00 p.m., an informal social gathering will take place at the Nogueira da Silva Museum for researchers, students and lecturers affiliated with the CECS Culture, Arts and Communities research group. This gathering will provide an informal opportunity for exchange and for strengthening connections among the group’s members.

As part of CONCILIARE, the event will conclude with na artistic intervention beside a monument in the city of Braga. The initiative invites participants to observe and critically examine the narratives inscribed in public space, questioning how the past continues to shape the present and exploring alternative ways of engaging with heritage and collective memory.

Everyone is invited to take part in the Seminar and attend the artistic intervention, contributing to a collective reflection on communication, diversity, memory and citizenship.
