Visual Culture Seminar: “We’re Still Here: Providência Gallery”

The Visual Culture Seminar ‘We’re Still Here: Galeria Providência’ will take place on 1 June at 2.00 pm(PT)/10h00 (BR), featuring a presentation of the outreach project entitled “Galeria Providência and the CAC/FCS Laboratory: Favela and University working together to promote human and urban development through art”, which gave rise to the documentary “We’re Still Here: Galeria Providência” (Directed by: Cíntia Sanmartin Fernandes, Carla Leal Helal, Cristiane Carvalho Corrêa (Cris Carvalho) and Hugo Oliveira).
The guest is Cíntia Sanmartin Fernandes, Associate Professor and researcher (ProCiência/FAPERJ) at the Faculty of Social Communication and the Postgraduate Programme in Communication at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She holds a PhD in Political Sociology from the Federal University of Santa Catarina. She is a researcher with CNPq and Prociência-UERJ. She also coordinates the CAC (Communication, Art and City) Research Group at UERJ.
Galeria Providência is a project coordinated by Hugo Oliveira, a resident of the community and a PhD graduate of the PPGCom at UERJ, which carries out initiatives and activities aimed at promoting the social and economic development of the residents of this community and its surroundings, particularly in the areas of education, culture and health. The partnership seeks to bring the favela’s residents and the University closer together, to collaborate in amplifying the voices and experiences of those living in Providência, and to preserve the memory of the favela—considered the oldest in Brazil—through documentary film, local initiatives and a cartography that fosters new perspectives on the region.
