The last session of the MilObs seminar cycle ‘Present and future of media literacy: contributions to a new agenda’ will be held on June 11 at 3pm online. The seminar will feature speeches by Sara Pereira, Daniel Brandão and Manuel Pinto and will focus on ‘Listening to children and young people: pedagogical and methodological implications for Media Literacy’.
Children’s right to be heard is enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a fundamental value (Article 12), and General Comment No. 12 (2009) sets out the conditions for its implementation. This right has had a great social and cultural impact, with repercussions in the field of action and research with children.
For this discussion, we will present some results from the bYou project, funded by the FCT, based on listening in focus groups to 390 children and young people aged between 11 and 18 on topics such as the media, participation and their interests and concerns. Based on their own voices, the reasons that encourage or, on the contrary, inhibit the expression of their opinions and their participation will be analysed. The ‘Express Yourself’ campaign and the bYou Digital Wall will also be discussed, as initiatives that aim to listen to and give a voice to young people.
